Preop Vitamin D levels

 Hey guys,

So I'm starting to get my preop labs done.  I only had a few of them (ones I may need to "tank up" before surgery) as I'm probably not having surgery until May 2012.  The only one that came back (so far) as a deficiency was my Vitamin D level, which was 26 (low normal = 30).  So it was a bit low and I've been taking a total of 800IU of Vit D3 a day x 2months.  My doc (PCP)told me to bump it just a little to 1000IU a day and that he'd recheck it in 3 months.  I was wondering if any other preop guys or postop folks when you *were* preop took extra Vit D.  I've read on some other posts of taking up to 5000IU/day to boost preop values.

Thoughts/Opinions?

Thanks!

Yep!  I had a low Vit-D level as well.  Mine was 31, so my PCP put me on 400IU a day and that got me up where I needed to be for surgery.  I get my bloodwork done next week to see how my 3 month post op levels are doing.

Great to hear you got your levels tanked up!  I hate to think what mine was before starting the 800IU/day for two months!

I also took vitamin D pre-op......it was one gel capsule per week of 50,000iu.  I think I took it for 3 or 4 months prior to surgery.
Post surgery I  do the 1000 per day.

I was surprised to learn that my vitamin D levels were drastically low before surgery. I was surprised to learn that this is a common thing.. Most obese people  have low levels of Vitamin D. They are doing some studies to see if this may be related to weight gain.. but I had to take some perscription doses of Vitamin D to bring it up before surgery.. Since surgery all levels have been perfect.  It's not at all uncommon

Thanks McGee and John!  I'm going to keep up with the vitamins and hope to bring up the levels!  I'll be getting new labs in about 3 months.
