C25K - Training Begins...

Hi All, I've decided to shake things up and follow a program that I know other guys on this board have done in the past. It's called C25K (Couch Potato to 5K) and I remember reading about it when I first started out on this journey and never thought that I would be able to do something like this...

Well fast forward 8 months after surgery and my training began today and here is the program that I am going to follow in the gym until I can get up to the point where I am running the full 5K on the treadmill: http://www.c25k.com/c25k_treadmill.html I did workout 1 in week 1 without a problem and can't believe that I ran!! Never imagined it but I did. When I hit the first minute of running I couldn't believe that I was running. At 506.5 lbs I never thought that I would ever, ever, ever run again... It is truly a miracle. I am going to do this program and try to keep updating every week as I progress. I have already got a bunch of friends who have committed to running a 5K with me in the spring. I think they are all thinking, yeah right, he isn't going to do it. Boy will they all be surprised when Mikey comes charging across the finish line ready to run another 5K.

If you are interested here is a link to a full description of the program: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Let the training begin!!

There is an android app that I found in the market for $1.99. Once I get down in weight some more I plan on following this as well. The app lets you use your android phone to play music as you walk/run and gives you audio cues as to when to switch between the walking and jogging.

That is so cool.  I just downloaded it to my HTC inspire.  Sure beats a piece of paper that I kept referring to!  I can't wait to do Workout 2 tomorrow!!  Thanks for the tip!

I starting this as well, well sort of, I have a 5k route marked from my house that makes a circle.  My son ran a 5k on Saturday in 28 minutes, my time this morning was 44 minutes so I have a ways to go to come close to him.

Great stuff and good job.  I used the c25k Pro Droid application today for the first time during wokrout 2 and it was awesome to keep my pace while also listening to my music.  Worked exactly like advertised.  Keep up the good work and good luck in your training.

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!

Love hearing about people getting out and doing something they nver believed possible!  I am happy to state that I am a C25K Failure/Drop out so even if you can't stick with C25K You can still run a 5K and do them fairly quick!

Time and dedication is all you need stick with it and be amazed at what you can accomplish!

Also go to a specialty running store and get fitted for some shoes.  Your body will thank you later!

Thanks Paul.  I am amazed that I can even run.  It was a shock when I could actually do the 8 1 minute runs in the C25K program.  It truly is amazing to me.  Yes, I was actually thinking today that I need to get better running shoes.  I think that I have walking shoes now but they don't seem to give me much cushion!  Thanks for the tip!!
