I am soo excited!  I also posted this on the Health and Fitness Forum, but wanted to also share with the Men's Forum...I just received the following email:

Congratulations! You are one of 400 winners selected to participate in the 2011 Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run.

The tradition of 400 runners and wheeling athletes to lead the way across the Mackinac Bridge at sunrise. The bridge connects Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. It is the largest suspension bridge in North America and the third largest in the world. Governor Jennifer Granholm jogged across the five-mile span overlooking the Straits of Mackinac on Labor Day 2003 opening the way for this new Labor Day tradition of fun and fitness for Michigan residents.

The Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run is a non-competitive run of about five miles over the Mackinac Bridge. It is organized by the Governor’s office, the Michigan Fitness Foundation, and the Mackinac Bridge Authority. This is not a timed event and the course will not be certified for distance. The Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run is limited to 400 participants who will be selected from a lottery drawing in June, 2011.

To think, a little over a year and a half ago, I was nearly 300 pounds and could barely walk up the stairs...This past month, I completed a 25K (15.5 miles) run.  I am now training for a full Marathon in October and now, on Labor Day, I'll be one of 400 runners given the privalege of running the Bridge with the Governor!  I AM PUMPED!!!!!

Man, that is REALLY cool!  You should be incredibly proud of all you've accomplished.  As I've said before, you're one of the guys that inspired me and helps to keep me motivated.  When I see what guys like you and Hercules have done with the gift of new life you were given, I cannot help but be "pumped up" about what's in store for me over the next few months.

I had my 2-week check-up following the hernia repair, and was told I could start back on the treadmill and doing "light" weights, but to avoid stomach crunches, bench presses, and things that would put strain on my gut for another week.  (Also I have to stay out of the water for another week - bummer.  I really enjoy the water jogging / aerobics.)  So, I'm at least partially back on track.

On a really exciting note...  My youngest daughter (who at one point was contemplating having WLS herself, but decided to give a structured program one last try) has really been doing well with her weight loss, but has been somewhat resistant to starting an excercise program...  Well, last week - completely on her own, with no pushing from me at all - decided to start the Couch-to-5K program with one of her friends, with the goal of running a 5K together early this summer.  Just as with her weight-loss program, she found her own way to succeed, and is now off and (quite literally) running with it.  I'm so proud of her!  She has lost well over 75 pounds (I don't ask unless she volunteers the info) and dropped several sizes.  She was always a beautiful girl, but these days, she is definitely turning heads.  It's amazing to see what it has done for her self-confidence and overall approach to life.  I get as much pleasure from her success as from my own!

Thanks Jim - glad to hear all is going well with your recovery and you are back to exercising again.  You will be back in full swing again in no time.

That is awesome news about your daughter.  I am sure both your weight loss and new exercise, fitness, and healthy eating lifestyle have been a positive motivation for her.  Keep up the great work as a family!

Mike,

Congrats on being selected. When I lived in Michigan this was a big deal and the Labor Day Run is a lot of fun. What a big changes you've made in a very short time. I've always enjoyed reading your posts because they have really inspred me and helped me realize I can make changes in my older age.

Enjoy the experience on Labor Day.
