I'm 6'5" and at my high weight of 310 lbs needed the seat belt extender. I flew in March at 225 lbs and couldn't believe the difference. Flew last week at 195 lbs and it was even better.
I'm sure 300 lbs and less you'll see a big difference. Even at 310 lbs I could still fit in a coach (ecomony) seat but it sure wasn't comfortable.

I'm 6'4, and when I flew to Cuba in March I tipped the scales at around 322.. Weighed in this week at 286.
I know at 322 I could just *barely* get the seatbelt to fit... There was a lot of suckin' and tuckin' going on, and it wasn't all that comfy.
I fly again on Sunday and am curious to see how it goes :)

I fly constantly for my job and I always use an extender at 360+ lbs. Generally, the rule of thumb I use is to pick an isle seat (the armrest to your right is yours as it has your TV controls on it) that way you can be sure to leave it up without a fight with your seatmate. Next, they usually ask anyone traveling with kids or needing assistance to board, then the elite frequent fliers can board. As soon as I hear that I am at the counter. I'm not an elite flier, but if challenged I could say I need an extra minute or two. (That's only happened once) This gives me enough time to get on board, stow my luggage and apply my extender without people staring at me. Thank God that I won't have to worry about this soon.
I did (and still do) fly a lot... +200k miles/year. I think 300 is still a good number. I'm 6'1 230 now, but was 6'1 390 at my biggest. I always tried for the aisle seat so I could spill into it. I'd still get hit by the drink cart and people walking through pretty regularly. At 390, seat belts rarely fit (only when in First... and not on all planes), but I would just put it on my lap but not lock it -- yeah, not a good idea, but too embarrassed to ask for an extender.
My problem was (and still is) the width of my shoulders. As an elite, I could get extra legroom, if not, you can still pay for it and I think it's worth the extra money. Now that I've lost most of the weight, my tailbone is quite sensitive and I have a sore ass after flying... I fit into the seat great though. I've started sitting on pillows/blankets to help.
