Flying Again Comfortably...

Hi Guys,

Hope this Monday finds you all doing well.  Just wondering at what point (weight) you found that it was comfortable for you to fly again (if you ever stopped)?

I personally haven't been on a commercial airplane since my honeymoon in 2000.  I remember it being tight then but we had booked our seats wisely and had two seat aisles so didn't have to squish someone (just each other which we didn't mind!!).

Anyway, my company, which has been very supportive of my journey, just casually mentioned that at some point in the next year we may have some travel and would I be interested.  I was honest and said that I would need to see where I am in my weight loss when the time comes but that yes I was interested.  The trips are always pretty fun and we are able to mix business with pleasure.

Thanks and I look forward to your responses.

I haven't flow for a while either, but I was able to do so pretty easily in coach when I weighed under 300 lbs (I am 6' 2").  Then I started paying up for first class and when I got to 330 lbs, then I avoided flying altogether.   At 330 and above, I needed seatbelt extenders even in first class.

Now down from 404 to 233, I think I could fly again -- even in coach -- but I at 6' 2" tall it will always be uncomfortable.  At my current weight after losing 170 lbs),  have had no problem fitting at any table or in any vehicle.

Hi Joe,  that is some good info as I am 6' 3" and will use that 300 number as a benchmark.  It is good to have.  I appreciate it.  Great to hear about your success!

Michael:

Thanks!  I have a set of aircraft seatbelt extenders I bought and no longer need.  If you want them, PM with your address and I'll send them to you.  They might come in useful in case you have to travel before you lose all of your weight.  It was nice to know I had a set on me so I wouldn't have to ask...

Thanks for the offer Joe but I am really not going to fly for another 80 lbs or so then hopefully I won't need them!!    I totally appreciate it!

I flew in October at 286 and did not need either of the seat belt extensions that I had "procured" on previous flights. I always found it embarrassing to ask, especially when I needed two. So, one flight after getting up the courage to ask, I just took them with me. I actually flew many times without buckling the seatbelt by tucking the ends of the belt under an untucked polo shirt. I know, foolish, huh?

Oh, and by the way, for the sake of karma, I left the two extensions on the plane in October ... It was the same airline I had borrowed them from on a previous flight.

I have used seat belt extenders for years... Bit in March, when I went to Florida, I found that at 290-ish, I no longer needed the extender. What a great feeling.

The funny thing is that the **tch sitting next to me was complaining the whole flight about the "fat guy" in the seat in front of us who could not stop bragging and showing off for the stewardess, his seat-mate, and anyone else within hearing range... She kept going on and on about "that fat guy" - and she WASN'T talking about me! LOL
