Hi MEN!!! not sure what meds/diet will be till i see Doctor tomorrow but my blood test show I have a low count on red cells that carry oxygen to the body...... I had Gastric Surgery Nov 2009... could this surgery be the reason for the low blood cells... Am I not getting enough vitamins? I take sublingual B vitamins and a 1 a day supplement.....I do not want to take any meds....keeping my fingers crossed............................ thanks men!!!!   VICTOR

Do you eat much red meat ? That can help. They will probably put you on iron.

Look 8 threads down on my "iron for men" post.  Are you taking your iron...If not do it now.  You may have to go in for IV infusions...Not fun but needed.  Put a little spinach in your diet along with the red meat.  Let us know what happens so we can be aware of issues that can arise...

Be sure you take your IRON or Multi with iron 2 or more hours apart from your calcium.

I would add to take along with Vitamin C. It helps the absorbtion of the iron.

I had an issue with my iron level being a little low.  I had to take iron tablets for about a month and have been fine since.

good luck

Your doctor should be able to tell you specifically which vitabmins you need to take.  I get confused as to what they are for, but I take vitamin A and iron in addition to Vitamin B1 and B12.  Of course, I also take C, D, and multiple vitamins.  I also take a prescription for Potassium.  I can't say the doses unless I look at the contaniners in my medicine chest.

My PCP put me on iron recently after I tested low. Be sure if you take iron that you also take vitamin C at the same time to assure absorption of the iron. Without the C, you are wasting your time and money taking the iron.

Hi Victor.

I hope all's well with you now. A good friend of mine had DS. He was put on iron pills and his iron level in his blood was plenyfull but his haemoglobin count was low (under 110 - normal 124) He saw a haematologist and he prescribed folate (folic acid), 5mg/day. Within a month he was fine. If you are still having problems with your red cell count talk to your doctor.
Hope alls is well.
