Mutterings of a "Waiter"

So I finally... after 3 months of waiting... got the letter in the mail advising of my endoscopy which is the next step in the process... 2 weeks time.

 In the mean time...

I've joined the "Biggest loser" 'competition' at work...  I haven't had any fast food in over a month... I've changed my diet pretty extensively, whi*****ludes eating breakfast every day.   I've also found tofu shirataki noodles which have completely replaced my whole wheat pasta... Man, what a great find those were!

I also started 'running'...  I'm currently on week 4 of the Couch-to-5k 'running' program.... So I've been doing that 3x per week plus hockey on Sundays.

In January I was almost 330lbs.   The other day, I tipped the scale at 298lbs.

I gotta be honest... The closer and closer I get to the surgery the more worried I become... I feel like this is the last kick at the can for me to be proactive about my weight and lifestyle.

As a bonus, in the last 4 days not once has my blood sugar level been above 7...  First time it's been undercontrol since I was diagnosed last fall...

It does sound like you've made great positive changes that will only increase your chances of success with WLS. Preops particularly don't realize the depth of lifestyle changes that will be needed after surgery. It's great that you have begun your changes now and will not have that to contend with after surgery as well. Continue to build good habits and post op will be far easier for you.

Good luck.

3 days at sub 300 now, so I guess the scale isn't broken lol

Anyways...  My BMI when I started due to my height was at the low end of the scale for surgery... The thing that pushed me over was my type 2 diabetes...   Now that my diabetes for the moment is normal (6.6 this morning), and my BMI has dropped below the 'threshhold' for surgery...

I guess I'm  concerned they'll say, "Oh look at you, guess you don't need it afterall"...  And I'm also, for the first time thinking that I might actually be able to do this THING.

I'm going to follow through with the endoscopy in 2 weeks... and continue to think about my options...  It's one thing to be able to do it for a month or two... but the rest of your life?

Congrats on some GREAT pre-op progress with both your diet and exercise!  Those lifestyle changes you are making now are going to be your key to success post-op.

I think all of us who have had WLS had those same thoughts as we were diligent with the pre-op diet.  I know my motivation was the "threat" that if I did not lose, I wouldn't be able to have the surgery.

I'm still very, very happy I had the surgery.  Like you, my BMI was borderline and the Type II Diabetes, with the sleep apnea and high blood pressure, made me a good candidate for RNY.

I also know that had I not had the surgery, I may have been able to stay on the diet for awhile, but eventually, I would "fall off the wagon".

Keeping you in my prayers that all continues to go well, you get all your approvals and can have your surgery.

In the meantime, keep up the great work!

Mike

295lbs today... Up to week 4 of the Couch to 5k...

Endoscopy in 6 days... then more waiting.

With blood sugar under control, and losing the weight, I'm feeling like this is the first time things have been productive when it comes to weight loss... so much so that I'm starting to reconsider my decision to go forward with the surgery...

I mean, if I'm able to finally keep it under control without surgery... why would I get it... But if I pass up this opportunity, and I fall back into my old habits... well then it's like 2 years wasted...  Ya know?
