One Year! WOW!

We'll gentlemen, tomorrow, 4/19/2011 is my One-year Surgiversary!  WOOHOO!

What a difference a year makes and what a wild ride it has been!

While I may not have had as much weight to lose as some, my health and life was in grave danger as a result of my obesity a year ago.  I am so thankful that I had RNY on 4/19/2010.  It definitely was a life-changing event!

My highest known weight was 287.  However, I am almost sure I likely hit 300 before I went to the Dr back in January 2010.  I hit my weight loss goal of 195 in early December 2010 and today, I am at 191 lbs.  I have about a 5 lb flux between 191 and 196 that I bounce between.  I am very happy and content at this weight.

I am no longer a type II diabetic.  I no longer have sleep apnea.  I no longer have asthma.  I have more energy and stamina than I did in my 30's.  I still take blood pressure medication, but my pcp tells me that is genetic and will likely never change.  (we'll see )

Two weeks ago I ran a half marathon.  This coming Saturday (4/23) I'll be in a 10 Mile race and in less than a month (5/14) I'll run a 25K (that's 15.5 miles).  My plan is to run my first full Marathon in October.  With each run, I am able to farther and faster than before.  A year ago, I could barely walk across the room or up the stairs without getting winded.

Thanks to my running and exercise, I pretty much can eat and enjoy what I please.  Yes, it is only small portions and I still avoid processed sugar.  I've also learned to eat less fat, more fruits, veggies, whole grains, and more natural/healthier foods.  As I can only eat a little at a time, I want to make sure what I eat is good, both in terms of taste and content.  I feel food no longer has me captive or on bondage.  Yea, I still crave some things and have even tried a couple of things.  Thanks to "dumping" I've quickly learned to "just say NO".  That "dumping" is a great psychological motivator!

This has been a life-style change for me.  A very positive, very good life-style change!

For those of you who may be lurking on this site, reading these posts and considering WLS...DON'T Wait!  Take the step to get healthy.

Remember, WLS is JUST A TOOL.  A damn good tool if used properly and in conjunction with good exercise and good nutrition.  My only regret is that I did not have my surgery years, no decades ago!

I am thankful to God for granting me grace to live to have the surgery.  It really has been a second chance for me.  I am thankful to my loving and supportive wife, who has been through all this with me.  I am thankful to my surgeon and my pcp.

I am also thankful for ALL of you have been with me to encourage, advise, and "kick-a$$" as needed!

I wish you all the best on your weight loss journey and GOOD HEALTH!

L'Chaim!

First of all, congratulations to you on reaching goal in less than a year.  But those of us who have come to know you through this forum are not at all surprised by your accomplishment.  You've been a source of inspiration and an example to all of us.  Thank you for being part of the community, and sticking around to help some of us newer folks with answers.  (Guess I can't call myself a total newbie now, but still seems like I'm just learning how to make this work!)

Anyway, enjoy your newfound health and lifestyle, and here's a toast () to many, many more years enjoying time with your family and friends!

Congratulations!  You're a testament to how well the WLS tool can work.  Nice to see another GHPer too.
