Vitamins
What are you guys doing for your vitamins?
Admittedly I rarely take mine like I should be. I have a million and one excuses why I don't take them but they are all bull**** and I just need to get it done.
I have the optifast bariatric chewable. The big ass chewable chalk flavored vitamin. I am thinking if I get one that is not sure a pain to get down I may remember to do it more often.

I take a fist full each day. My program recogmends the following (this is from memory and not sure if I will forget something)
Calcium citrate 1 am 1 pm
Super B complex 1 am
Adult Multivitamin 1 am
B 12 sublingual 2 am
Vitamin D 1 am 1 pm
I think I a missing something. I pour them for a couple weeks at a time, so I would have to look at the bottles to see what I am missing
I was recently in the hospital and had a fight becuase they tried to tell me that oyster shell calcium was just as good as the calcium citrate and actually got upset with me when I refused it and the b 12 pills. They did not want to listen to me that I did not have enough stomach acid to absorb the calcium.

I had a similar issue. A few weeks ago when I was in the hospital for the Kidney stone. They kept trying to give me Ibuprofen. No matter how many times I explained that I just had gastric bypass and I was not allowed to have NSAIDs.
They argued with me until I stumbled on the magic words. "I refuse that treatment"
They had to back down at that point, but oh every nurse on the floor turned on me real fast. Luckily I went home that afternoon.
It amazes me how many Drs are unaware of the condition and requirements for RNY post op.

Yes you do need to get on a strict regiment of taking your supplements. The effects of not doing so can cost you your life or your health at best. Many issues that are caused by vitamin deficiencies take a long time to surface and by the time they do it is typically to late.
You should have known that this was part of what you were signing up for before your surgery. You are correct in that any excuse being bull**** because there really is no excuse. The couple times I have been in the hospital I have made sure that they give me my supplements or they let me bring mine in.
You took sch a major step to get your life back why tunr around and throw it away again?

Below is my daily intake of vitamins. These are a pain, but as Paul said I wouldn't risk not taking these for the rest of your life. Rotten teeth, bone disease, osteoporosis etc... are not good alternatives. Suck it up and keep taking your vitamins daily. The alternatives suck...
Bariatric Advantage Chewable Multivitamin 6:30 am
Bariatric Advantage Chewable Iron 6:30 am
B 12 sublingual 6:30 am
1500 mg Calcium Citrate with 1000 IU D3 (9am 12pm 3pm - 500mg each of 3 pills)

I just recently had a bunch of labs run -actually the entire annual list from the assn of bariatric surgeons. My vitamin intake has really skyrocketed due to the results. I take:
2 multis per day
3 calcium 500mg each
3 iron vita lady's tender iron carbonyl 2am 1pm
2 vit C 500mg each taken with iron
Vit A
Magnesium
B12 sublingual
Vit D 10000 units twice weekly
Vit D sublingual three times weekly on days without the other D pill
Because of the required separation of iron and calcium, this means five times a day I am popping some sort of a pill. The only pill that is a real issue for me is the multimi am now using. It's the vita lady multi, the capsule is way too big and the pill stinks. When I finish this bottle, I think I'll probably return to the Centrum Silver I was taking. The vita lady brand has a bit more of some stuff, but I'm not certain it is enough for the difference in pill size and odor.
As for health care professionals, most have no idea what we need nor do they care. You need to take control and tell these people what you will and won't do. And when they treat you like **** ... And they will ... Be prepared to let them have it. You may be able to save someone else from this sort of issue in the future by training the health care professional yourself. Or, you might just be on the nurse's **** list for life. Oh well, I'm not in this to make friends.
