Sleep Apnea
I had severe sleep apnea (86 incidents per hour) and had to have a BiPAP machine (has two levels of air pressure). Damn near impossible to get used to it for the first few nights, but man, what a difference it made! May well have saved my life, because I was getting something like 2-3 minutes of REM sleep per night before I started using it.
However, I no longer need it at all. About 3-4 months after RNY surgery, I was able to sleep without it, with minimal snoring and no apnea. Now, 5 months out, even the snoring is gone - good riddance! What a relief that is!
Funny story... You know how we still think of ourselves as being the same size we were before WLS? Well, 3 months after surgery I had lost so much weight that the BiPAP mask no longer would remain sealed against my face at night. It would start "whining" during the night as air leaked past the silicone seals... My wife hated it, so she's the one who convinced me to try sleeping without it - then stayed up watching me for 4 hours to see if I was having any more apnea incidents. Is she great or what?
