Post op alcohol consumption (C'mon fellas)
CHICO!!! PARTY!!! Chico State grad here also!! Knew about the claim to fame with Playboy Magazine. Spent some time in Madison Bear and The Graduate!! Now my 2 cents...Where's my soap box??
Ditto...Allow for the healing and be aware of how quickly alcohol can hit you. For me just sipping an 1/2oz to an oz of wine will hit me...Just a buzz. Ditto on the empty calories...Almost like carbs (hey they are carbs)...empty simple carbs. I personally waited maybe 6-12 months before I started sipping wine again. I feel like a dad talking to his teenage son here. Be really really aware of the transfer addiction issue. You have taken away your comfort security blanket. I have heard (as per Oprah) that 30% of people who have WLS develop a cross/transfer addiction. Just go at it with eyes wide open. One of the saddest things I have seen post op is at 2 different times, women getting up at support group meetings and sharing that they are now alcoholics...And the struggles they are going through (they weren't alcoholics pre op). Eyes wide open...

Two quick stories:
1. I was at a minor league ball game last summer and had two 8oz beers. It really kicked my ass. It was the numb nose kind thing after 16oz beer. That was at 5 years out. It can hit hard and quick and last a while.
2. A work buddy who had WLS and was on the fast track to supervisor started drinking and had the classic addiction transfer situation. Long story short, he lost his job and is now serving years in jail because of his new addiction to drugs and alcohol.
I don't have an answer just two cautionary tales.

I've read some horror stories over the years about people with a new RNY drinking, and they have not been pretty. Normally it involves either crapping in their pants or passing out and crapping in their pants.....both seem to be really bad possiblities. I'm sure there are many that have tested the waters before a years time, but I wouldn't be one of them....because the last thing you want to be known for amongst your buddies is the guy who craps his pants everytime he takes a drink.
