C25K Check In - Week 8 [xpost]

Well, this isn't exactly a week 8 check in.  Because I bypassed week 8 and went right to week 9.

Today I ran my first 5K!  Four months from my surgery date.  Four months from 294 pounds.  And I ran 3.1 miles in 29 minutes and 50 seconds!  I am so thrilled.

I thought this accomplishment was still 5 weeks away (my originally planned first race), but that's not the way this worked out.  Instead, with cajoling from a partner in this crazy online group, I signed up for today's race as a precurser to a 10K in 3+ months.

This week's runs:

Sunday: 3 miles outside (first run outdoors).  Not sure on the time, but I know it was slow.

Tuesday: 3.1 miles running outside + .5 miles walking (warm up and cool down).  Did this right at a 10 minute mile pace: 31 minutes for the running.

Thursday: 3.4 miles on the treadmill, 3.1 miles running.  Did most of it at 6.0 mph, but did a few short spurts at 6.8 mph.  Finished the 3.1 miles in 30:20.

Then today!! Saturday's jogforacause: official 5K race and I met my personal goal of coming in under 30 minutes.  Even with a couple minutes of walking.  First mile time: 9:05.  Second mile: 9:49.  Third mile: 10:03.  Considering I've been training at a 10 minute mile pace, I'm excited to see that I took off as 'quickly' as I did.  Was tough to maintain that pace, but I didn't fall off too drastically.

Thanks again to all here for your support and encouragement.

Let me just say finishing after someone from here doing there first race requires a gas mask .  I debated doing the 10K to give the finish line a chance to defunk.

Awesome job Chad it was a blast both talking you into it and seeing you at the finish.

EDIT:
here is a link to the run from my Garmin so the numbers show my stats but the course was the same.
