I am not sure I want an answer... oh well

Ok gents, I wanted to ask about dumping. Now I had surgery on Jan 24th so I am about 6 weeks and I am on Proteins and small amounts of cooked Veggies.

I had pulled pork the other night that was cooked in BBQ sauce with out thinking. After I finished I was kicking myself for eating the BBQ thinking I was going to start dumping soon with all the sugar in the sauce. For better or worse I didn't get sick. I have had BBQ one other time since then and same result felt fine.

But the problem is now I am wondering if I will dump on sugar and that is leading me to a whole new set of temptations.

I've got a feeling that the BBQ sauce you had was made with less than 14 g of sugar per serving and was hence ok for you which is why you didn't dump.  Just as a reference the BBQ dipping sauce at Longhorn Steakhouse only has 10 Carbs per serving which means 10 or less g of sugar and is fine to have.

So I wouldn't let this experience send you on a sugar binge.  As soon as you give into one of your sugary temptations make sure that you are either home or near a bathroom just in case!

Good Luck.

Thanks dude, that is enough info to keep me from trying.
My biggest weakness is those stupid f'n hostess mini doughnuts at the gas station when grabbing some dip. So far I have been good but I have a bad fealing it is only a matter of time.

Remember only about 30% of people will dump and not everyone dumps on the same things. Some will dump from fats and some from sugars.  As some people get farther out they find the point at which they dump and will enjoy a treat to that point.

Don't rely on your RNY to cure your desire for empty calories, but rather rely on yourself to get you through it.  Keep your eye on the goal and you can do it.

RNY on 11/02/10 with
I don't know if I dum*****t...   And I have no intention towards finding out, either!  At 4 months out (today - yikes!) I haven't given in to any sugary temptations...

Frankly, one of the reasons I elected to have RNY (versus VSG or DS) was that the fear of dumping would help keep me off the sweets.  Now, after 4 months without them (5, really, counting the pre-op diet) I find I don't really miss the sugary crap.  I really think that getting away from drinking soda (even diet soda) helped a LOT in that regard.

Hopefully, this is a "permanent" brain change, and I can keep it up for life.  I'd much rather be able to go flying than be able to eat a donut!

Ditto to what Paul and Jim said.  The best approach is to let that FEAR of dumping keep you from falling off the No-sugar wagon.  I am one of those who IF I knew I could eat sugar, like those DAMN little donuts, that would be the end of me.

Go look for my post about a month or two ago about Nutter Butter Peanut Butter Cookies...ugh...even as I type this my little pouch does a couple of flip flops thinking about that experience...again, enough to keep me on the No-sugar ride!

Believe me, there have been several times, especially recently as my running and activity level has increased, that I have been tempted to try something sweet.  I honestly believe that my sugar addiction and my abstenance from sugar is akin to an alcoholic.  Like a recovering alcoholic cannot have one drink, I can't have sugar.

Ok, now all that being said, I do find that I am able to "tolerate" certain sauces, like your BBQ sauce, without any problem.  The key is a "little" taste.  I have also found that some sauces, like Sweet and Sour sauce at a Chinese resturant is just too sweet.  It makes me queezy.

Good luck and keep up the great progress!

Mike

Sugar with protein is not the same as sugar on an empty stomach either.

I too was hoping that my RNY would cause me to dump on sugar.. but as Paul said.. only about 30% of people experience this problem/reward!!  At first I avoided every bit of sugar, even bought sugar free ketchup.. I really thought I'd be a dumper!!.. In the early stages, a bit of a donut left me feeling ill, a spoonful of ice cream did the same thing..
Now I can eat pretty much anything.  If I stick to the protein first philosophy, I'm usually too full to eat any significant quanitity of sweets.
I bought a bunch of sugar free hard candies.. and when I have a yearning for something sweet, sucking on one of these usually does the trick..
The "bread like" texture of mini donuts would probably bother you more than the sugar anyhow.

My problem was always salty snacks.. I could eat a whole Costco size bag of Lays potato chips.. Now 7 or 8 of them and I've had enough.. (I never could understand how normal people could do that) but after a small handfull I just don't want anymore..
