To be honest I am scared too. I will have a date hopefully this week for a VSG and I am a single custodial parent and want to be sure I am hear until my daughter grows up. I'm afraid about complications, death, depression of losing my friend (food) and so many other things. I'm even afraid of backing out last minute. But I think fear is healthily and like everyone says we need to stay focused on WHY we wanted to do this in the meantime. To feel better!

Its definitely OK to be scared.  I will say to use that fear as a motivator to get you through the process and find a strong support system to talk to.  I mentioned the risk vs. gain earlier and I think again that there is risk in anything we do, we just dont associate it with surgery.  Think of the risk of driving on a freeway at 70 mph-Its normal to do but surgery is not so we emphasize the negative outcome.

Another thing that I want to make clear and I hope I dont take any hits for this but someone needs to say it.  You will lose your friend (Food)........  But not for ever!

Like you said, fear is good, food is temporary, health needs to be forever!  Congratulations on changing your life.  :)

Others have said most of what I was going to say, so I'll just add my "second" to the thoughts above.  Like you, I was scared witless a few days before surgery.  You'd have to be a fool to not be a little bit (or even a LOT) scared at undergoing a major surgery.  But I can tell you this much:  Having this surgery has changed my life in ways I could not even dream of back in late October when I was having my "panic" attacks (surgery was 11/2/10).  In the 3 1/2 months since then, I've lost 105 lbs, my blood pressure has gone from 145/95 to 126/76, resting pulse rate from ~90 to ~68, I'm completely off my diabetes medicine, and I no longer have painful, swollen knees, ankles, and feet from just working my day job.  I'm spending 2 hours a day at the gym, and actually enjoying it.  On weekends, I can do things with my wife (yeah, including honey-dos) that I haven't been able to do in years.  I've dropped 10 inches in my pants sizes - and the latest ones are getting a bit baggy, so it will be time to replace them soon.  My next clothes will come from a "regular" store instead of the Big & Tall shops.  So, go ahead and be a bit apprehensive about the surgery.  Make all the arrangements in case the worst should happen - that's your responsibility so don't leave it to your family.  But trust in your decision about your surgeon and your surgery, and focus on all the reasons you went down this path in the first place.  If you did your homework (and it sounds like you did), you've made a good decision, so try to get some sleep, relax as much as you can, and get ready for the most amazing ride of your life!
