What do you tell people when they ask "How are you losing the weight?"
I had a co-worker mention that he could really see a difference in my appearance and asked how I'd managed to take off weigh. I wasn't comfortable with giving full disclosure because I've heard him express some negative opionion about a person that we know mutually that had lapband surgery.
I told him that I had cut out eating bread and sugar (which is true) and I'm sticking to a high-protein, low-carb diet (which is also true), but I did feel like I was being less than honest.
I'm interested in hearing your responses.
Thanks.

almost everyone I have told has been extremely supportive of it. At least to my face. I have only had one coworker tell me anything adverse about having the surgery, but it didnt bother me as his opinion matters nothing to me :D
I have noticed on some of the bodybuilding forums that people slam people with surgery very badly. I never mention it when I post on those forums.

You told him the truth. You are loosing weight due to diet and exercise. nuf said.
Generally, that is my first response when casual acquaintances or people I hardly know ask. I sometimes go into more detail, including surgery specifics for those I am close to and know I can trust.
One of my biggest pet peeves is how people feel they have the right to comment on weight and weight loss. It really is none of their &*^%ing business! Ok...I feel better now that I've vented! : )

You are not obligated to discuss health issues with anyone. I have picked and chosen who I tell. I don't really want to discuss my surgery with someone I barely know. When someone asks if I am losing weight, after first thinking to myself, "No **** Dick Tracy, even you noticed I'm down 160 lbs," I have two general answers ... the first is a smile and "Yes, thank you for noticing" and the second is "I guess I might be." One way or the other, it shuts down the conversation with those I don't want to discuss it with.

Love the "first thought"...Don't you love that question, "are you losing weight?'
I like to respond, "No, I they aren't lost. I know exactly where they went and what happened to them." then turn and walk away.
Again, if it is someone I know well, or someone i think would benefit from knowing my story, I go into more detail and in not such a smart ass way.

I am like Nate and open about my surgery and my post-op life. Surgery has been a minor part of the changes I have made to my life.
When I tell people I had surgery I quickly inform them that I now monitor my calorie intake and maintain about 1200-1300 calories a day and workout 7-9 times a week on avg. Workouts combine running, weights and TaeKwonDo classes. I also inform them that I completed my first 5k 11 weeks after my surgery.
No I get to include I am training for a Mini Tri on May 22, and 10K on July 4th. Then 10K will have about 60,000 runners.
