Pureed Stage

Hey guys wanted to get your opinion on the Pureed stage diet.

I have 1 more week of this and every day seems a bit harder then the last. I have tried everything on the "menu" from the packet the Nutritionist gave me and to be frank it all sucks. I just can not seem to get anything down. Once out of the blender every protien no matter what i cut it with just revolts me. I get a couple bites down and I cant seem to get anymore down. It is not a physical reaction but a mental block that I cant seem to get past.

I have been living off protien shakes, scrambled eggs, and canned tuna. But most days I found myself only having a few protien shakes and a ton of water. I know this is not healthy and I am doing my recovery a disservice but for some reason I can not break this habbit.

The strangest part is I am never hungry. Well never is not 100% accurate, I feel hungry when I see those damn quad steak burrito comericals for taco bell, or some other add on TV. But when it comes to getting food I cant even bring myself to prepare anything.

You fellas have any suggestions to getting past the next week or so untill I am allowed to get some solid protien in?

First, you may have a stricture...Very treatable and very common.  It usually occurs at 3 weeks out.  Try a little low fat mayo to your egg or tuna salad.  Other things that may work; cottage cheese, string cheese, Wendys Chili (puree), peanut butter (watch the sugar), cooked spinach or cooked vegetables (frozen).  I'll post below about strictures.  Brian

This is a repost...but if it can help even one RNYer who is wondering "WHAT DID I DO WRONG...I can't keep down my food.  I followed the doctor's orders to a tee".  This may help.
What is a stricture?  This question comes up weekly, if not daily on OH.  Below is a copy and paste from Wikipedia.  If you are a few weeks out post op from RNY and have problems keeping well chewed food (even water) down, you might have a stricture.  Very common and very treatable (about 5% of RNY patients get them).  Also do not freak out if you have to go back a second or third time to get treated for one.  The Gastroenterologist will go just below the pouch and air up the "balloon" .  It is an outpatient procedure and you will be sedated.

As the anastomosis heals, it forms scar tissue, which naturally tends to shrink ("contract") over time, making the opening smaller. This is called a "stricture". Usually, the passage of food through an anastomosis will keep it stretched open, but if the inflammation and healing process outpaces the stretching process, scarring may make the opening so small that even liquids can no longer pass through it. The solution is a procedure called gastroendoscopy, and stretching of the connection by inflating a balloon inside it. Sometimes this manipulation may have to be performed more than once to achieve lasting correction.

First off you won't be hungry (physically) for many more months.  The hunger you do get is pure head hunger Thanks to Taco Bell.  This is totally normal and a direct result of surgery (well not the taco bell part).  By severing your stomach they have cut the nerves which causes blah blah POOF NO HUNGER! get the idea?

As for pureed stage well I feel your pain having lived it for 13 weeks in my recovery.  Try some refriend beans with a bit of cheese, yes beans are a carb but they are a complex carb and not fully absorbed but they are also a source of protein.  Try some ricotta bake  Low Fat ricotta cheese a bit of egg some seasonings parm cheese and cheadder mix the egg ricotta and finely grated parm in a bowl bake on 350 until brown then throw on the cheadder oh yea talk about yummy.

Try greek yogurt (stuff sucks on it's own) but I add a pack of SF Cheesecake Pudding a couple spoons of splenda to 2 cups of it and oh yes it is good.

Egg Salad made with low fat Mayo.

Keep your eye on the goal and you can get through this.
