TYPICAL BROCK...Say a whole bunch of crap about the DS, and then block me before I can respond....tsk tsk tsk. You might need the info I have about the DS at some point in your lap band journey....since the lap band doesn't work.

Welcome to the Men's Forum, wAs.  (Intersting name, by the way!)  We'll scoot over to make room for you on the Loser's Bench!

I refuse to take sides in the discussion on which surgery is right for you, because I'm not you, and only you and your sugeon can make that decision.

I do agree that you should investigate all of the options, and discuss them with your surgeon.  But please don't let your surgery schedule make the decision for you.  If you're truly comfortable with your decision, then by all means proceed.  But if you haven't really considered other options, you should do so now, before you're committed...

Good luck to you, whatever your decision!

Welcome to the mens forum and remember to do your research and determine what WLS surgery is BEST FOR YOU!  just because someone says the Lap Band is crap does not mean you won't be successful, it just takes a lot of work.

When reading these forums remember that you will usually encounter 3 types of people,

The first type of person are those that are doing good with their surgery and believe that it is the only surgery that should be done.  These people tend to do nothing but criticize the other forms of WLS surgery.

The second type of person is the one that is unhappy with their WLS and it's results.  These individuals will tend to do nothing but bash the surgery they have had regardless of the population of people who are having some success with the same surgery.

The 3rd type of person is the one who is happy with the surgery of their choice but reconizes that there are other options and no one surgery is right for everyone.  These are the people that will encourage you to do the research of all surgeries and make a decision based on what fitsin your life.  Things like BMI and the amount you want to lose along with comorbidities, willingness to commit to a supplement regime and the ability to afford those supplements can become a major factor.  This is because that all WLS surgeries will require some form of regime for vitamins and such, and some are more forgiving if not consistently followed while others can quickly lead to serious complications if not followed.  Some procedures require a larger number of supplements which will increase the cost.

The reality is that each of these surgeries gives you a tool to aid you in losing weight.  And you will lose weight with each of them.  How much and how long it takes is different for everyone regardless of the surgery.  The key to any of these procedures is the need to make a change in lifestyle.  Moving from an unhealthy life style to one of healthy choices.

Forget all the bashing and wild claims.  Yes the DS is more forgiving in the foods that can be tolerated category but don't think if you eat nothing but Pizza and Ice Cream that you will be successful.  On the otherside their is the belief that if you have the RNY you will dump if you eat sugars and fats, while this is true for about 30% of people it is not true for everyone.

So again make the decision that is right for you and then work it.

I didn’t fully realize the passion surrounding the topic of WLS types. I do appreciate the information shared by everyone. I'm better informed now.

I will say that I'm going through with lap band surgery Wednesday morning. This decision was not one that I arrived at without considerable thought and consideration. I'm aware of the various statistics surrounding this type of surgery and I have considered the risks and weighed them against other surgery types. I’ve been considering WLS for about 5 years; in the end, this is a choice that I can live with.

A number of factors went into my decision:
1. Cost - My insurance will pick up 80% of the cost of lap band after a deductible is met. No small thing.
2. For me weight loss is primarily a health issue. I have type II diabetes, and I take a couple of oral medications as well as insulin shots. Also, I'm taking medications for the full gamut of metabolic syndrome related conditions. I've had, and I am having, increasing issues with kidney function and eyesight related to diabetes. So, "success" for me is not defined so much by the pounds, but more by how can I slow the destruction of my kidneys and eyes?
3. My wife had the lap band procedure a couple of months back. (I’ll add she has done extremely well!) Thus far, she’s lost just over 30 pounds. Her doctor has already taken her off a number of medications. This is a journey that we want to share together. Jointly, we decided this was the best choice for us.
4. My primary care doctor and my endocrinologist are supportive of lap band surgery in my particular situation.

So, I’m moving forward. I’m hoping (praying) for success. Time will tell, but whatever the outcome – I have peace with this decision.

good luck to you. It's not passion so much as compassion for me. I've seen way too many people have to go through a 2nd WLS which is usually MUCH more painful and prone to risk then a "virgin" WLS. But to each his own, if this is the decision you feel most comfortable with...then I wish you the best.
