Hey fellas quick question. Im going through the pre-op weight loss step right now, and I wanted to know what steps and methods did you guys take to help lose those pre-surgery pounds. What kind of diet did you follow? Any tips or advice?

High Protein Low carb.  I began walking nightly, I started out shooting for a mile and then increased my goals from there. Eventually I worked my way up to 4 miles in under 90 minutes.

Developing the High Protein Low carb, along with exercise habits early on will go along way to your post-op success.

I started drinking crystal light or water because i was such a huge soda drinker. then i cut my portions in half and started eating yogurts & string cheese as my snacks. I also started walking at least a mile a day and if i could go 2x a day i would. The other thing i did about a month before surgery was eating lean cuisine meals under 300 calories 2x a day. I lost 63 pounds before surgery....Hope this helps & good luck!!!!!!! If you have any questions message me

Ok, then it seems like I'm on the right track then. I'm up to a mile and a half at the gym since starting last week and a good 30 minutes of resistance training to help build up my muscles. I make sure to drink water constantly, at least 8 glasses a day. I'm doing the the high protein low carb diet too, and have cut my caloric intake to about a 1000 calories or less daily. I tried slim fast for a few days but it just left me way to hungry through out the day. I do the lean cuisine thing too Jeff. At least with that I don't feel like Im starving all day.

Thanks a lot for the input fellas. I"ve lost about 8 pounds in the last two weeks, but I was starting to wonder if I was doing enough. I'd like to lose at least 10% of my body weight before surgery which would mean about 34 lbs. I want to to try to make surgery for the doc as easy as possible.

I was required to do 2 weeks on Optifast before my surgery. It's a low cal, high protein, low carb meal replacement and I had 3-4 per day and nothing else other than water. YMMV but I dropped 25lbs during those two weeks and wasn't doing any special excercising other than a daily walk.

My surgeon requires it for all patients not only to get their weight down prior to surgery but also to reduce size and fat content in the liver which in turn reduces the chance of complications with the operation.

Sounds like you are on the right track Juan.  Low Carb, high protein, lotsa lotsa water, and exercise.  My surgeon had a specific diet for the two weeks immediate pre-op.  Like many others, he required a 20 lb loss pre-op, mainly to shrink the liver.  It gives them more room to work, especially for the laproscopic procedure.

Like you, the Slim Fast and other shake type diets never worked for me.  I would get too hungery, drink the shake, then end up eating and ... well you all know too well the vicious cycle!

Keep up the great work!  Again, I hope and pray you get all your approvals soon and get your date!

I wasn't required to really lose weight preop. My surgeon made me do a test diet to see if I could handle the DS, that lasted about 2 weeks.....but after that I was good to go for surgery.

To lose weight preop I use to do high protein low carb, I suppose that would pretty good training for post op life.
