Protein

Any tips on getting in the required protein. I've tried protein drinks and those 3 oz "shots" they are just terrible. I'm just over a week out and I know how important protein is to healing but just can't bring myself to drink these things. Once I'm on solid foods I know I can eat protein bars but for now I am struggling to get to the 60-80 g the doc recommends.

For me the key was finding a protein that I could tolerate or enjoy which I found one I enjoy.  I learned that Protein is like Booze if you are buying Boons Farm it will do the trick but won't be to enjoyable, but if you buy a nie Pinot it goes down much easier.  My point is that I feel this is one area where you get what you pay for.  The$10 tub at Walmart will be different that the $40 tub from say GNC, you just need to find what works.  If you current one doesn't then try something else.  I know GNC sells there protein in smaller less expensive bags, but they are still more than say Walmart or Costco.

If you find one you tolerate or enjoy then start playing around withit to keep it interesting Banana Shake with SF Chocolate suryp makes an awesome choclate covered banana.

I use the GNC Pro Performance 100% Whey

This is one of the most common issues new post op people face..."I can't get in all my protein...I can't get in all my water".  Do your best and you should be fine.  The one tip I give to people is put a spoonful of cottage cheese or yogurt on your bed stand.  When you go pee in the middle of the night eat what is on the spoon.  I know it's usually the last time you would think of getting your protein in, but it works.  Or put an oz of milk on the nightstand...3 am I'm getting in my protein!!

I've said it a dozen times (sorry, veterans), but I mixed Isopure ready-to-drink 50/50 with diet fruit juice, and it made it tolerable to me.  It really helps to cut the "metallic" after-taste of the Isopure.  The grape flavor Isopure mixed with diet Ocean Spray Cranberry Grape, and the orange flavor mixed with diet V8 Splash Tropical were (and still are) my favorites.  That's how I got both protein and liquids down at the same time.  Not sure I could have done it without them.

Jim, i'm with you on this one.  I read about the ISOPURE, i bought fruit punch, and its loaded with protein.  i mix it with cranapple juice/ water (sugarfree) and its very enjoyable on a large cup of ice.  I can't stand the protein shakes, and haven't had any in a few weeks, but the isopure has been doing the trick.

There is a new drink out that pre-mixed has 25g of protein and I really enjoy it. It is Total Lean and it comes in Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry. The powdered version does not have as many protein, when mixed with milk it only has about 15g protein. I was told they are coming out with a powder that has more.

I highly suggest trying the pre-mixed version, I believe it is cheaper then Isopure.

Thanks for all your tips. I went out and bought Diet V8 Splash, Diet Cranberry Grape, and Light V8. So far the one that works the best for me is the Light V8. Mainly because I find most of these protein  drinks are sweet and its a nice break to have something that is not sweet.

One other thing  - I generally dilute even the 'diet' juices 50/50 with water if I'm just drinking them plain.  Otherwise, they're just too sweet for me.  Since RNY, everything tastes almost too sweet for me.  It's actually been fairly easy to avoid my "downfall" foods (deserts, candy, cookies, and ice cream) because they are all so sweet they turn my stomach.  Guess that's a "really good thing"...
