5k Training for a Newbie

Some of us in the family are planning to do a 5k in July. I remember a post (and now can't find it) with suggestions on how to work up to the run.

Is there a website or link for a suggested work out program to get non-runners in shape for a 5k?

On a side note, I sure wish the search feature on this site worked better. Very frustrating trying to find something in an older post.

I've been here for 11 1/2 years and I was never aware that there is or was a search feature.  How do you get to it and how do you use it?

The search "box" in the upper right hand portion of the site (near the "sign out" and "help" links). On 1 of my PCs it works but gives me way too much information and I have a hard time getting it to narrow the search parameters.

On another of my computers (an older one), it doesn't work at all.

The C25K program is good to get ready for your first 5K. As for advice on other aspects of training I think the exercise and fitness forum here on OH is a great resource. Things like hydration can be an issue for some, and some items specific to RNY can make hydration and nutrition a bit more tricky.

Good Luck!

Bingo!! C25K was the program I remember reading about in a earlier post. Thanks for the assistance.

Also like the Coolrunning website. Lots of very good info and "tools" to help me get started.

The guys on this site are fantastic. Thanks again for the help.

I started C25K today. Not entirely a couch potato, but not at all a runner!

There's a local 5k mid-April here, and I've set that as my goal.

Would love to check in with you weekly to check out your progress, and vice versa, if you're willing.

Not a bad idea to do a weekly check-in on progress. Maybe a thread similar to the Sunday Weigh-In.

I haven't started the C25K yet but hope to begin shortly. I'm, too, not at all a runner. My last 5K was in 1983 and I almost didn't make it.

Jump on board.  We can do it!

I did day one on Tuesday, and was 'running' for the 60 second intervals at 6 mph (they don't call me Lightning Legs for nothin')!  I am going to get over to the gym again tonight for day 2 (week 1).

On Tuesday, I was locked into a program that I was watching, so I ended up walking for a while after the c25k intervals were over, and put in a full hour on the treadmill.  3.6 miles.  Hey, it was a slow walk for some of the time!!
