Over the years the things I have read on the Main, RNY, and Men's Forums it seems that most people wait anywhere for 6-12 months before the go to coffee big time. Since you are over 2 years I would say go for it. Many people will add their protein powder to their coffee. Regular or decaf is OK. Before WLS I could take or leave coffee. Now it is the one things I can hardly live without...even more than chocolate. My taste buds are sharper now. I only drink McDonald's coffee. It doesn't have a bitter after taste. Bye the way...Can't stand Starbucks coffee...Very bitter after taste. Sometimes McDonalds will buy cheaper beans and it taste like every other coffee. I am a little strange in what I add to my coffee...Alot of all of these things; milk, sugar, Splenda, Equal. Just me.
I'm a half-caf man. Well...the first cup may be 3/4 caf. I usually stop at Panera on my way home from the gym around 6:00 am. Love their Hazelnut coffee which is caffinated and mix that with about 1/4 decaf. My "2nd" infusion is around 9 - 9:30. Then I go decaf afternoon.
I too will sometimes mix my Protein powder and benefiber with my am coffee. Makes kind of a "loaded" mocha, which goes down real easy and is quite filling, but helps get my protein in.
I also like a cup of decaf in the evening as my dessert. Even when we are out at a restaurant and everyone else is getting sugar loaded desserts, I can enjoy my cup of decaf.
Like everything else, try it and see how you tolerate it. One word of caution, caffeine is an appetite stimulant. That is the main reason most WL Docs and Nuts will say NO CAFFEINE.
Got to go, my evening coffee is ready

I was a "leaded" coffee guy until the day I had RNY surgery (3 months ago). I was told I'd have to give up coffee (even decaf) and tea forever. The doc and NUTS claim that coffee and tea (except herbal tea) have tannic acid and other properties that could cause problems / ulcers in our small pouch.
Not really sure whether to believe them or not. But, so far I'm trying to follow their rules. So, mark me down as neither.
