First pureed meal.....finally post liquid only!
Well, I had my first pureed meal this morning for breakfast......I made what is likely a common error and prepared way too much!
For breakfast I prepared a plate of thinned down oatmeal (pureed) with a bit of Splenda brown sugar, a bit of yogurt and some no-sugar added apple/berry applesauce. The total meal weight was approximately 2 ounces. I barely made it throught the oatmeal before hitting the 30 minute time window - never got to the yogurt or applesauce. The nutritionist at my center talks about eating for 30 minutes or until you get a subtle 'full' feeling - whichever comes first.
Maybe I was eating too slow, but being that it was my first meal, I wanted to make sure everything set OK - I hate vomitting and thankfully have not had to endure that yet. I don't want to start now.
I can already tell getting all of my liquids in today is going to be a challenge given the time contraints of not drinking for 30 minutes after meals. Not sure that leaves enough hours in the day for me at this point!
Now, on to a protein shake so at least I get that in!

Sounds like you are doing good. Things will be a struggle at first and getting fluids can and will be difficult. Hell at 5 months I sometimes have trouble getting my fluids in.
Take it slow and if you don't get the full serving size in don't worry about it at this point.
Good Luck.

I wouldn't go with the oatmeal for a few more weeks or months. You have a limited space in that pouch. That is why they say "protein first". If you don't do protein first you risk the issue of losing muscle mass. People will ususally lose some muscle mass anyways...But by eating other stuff it can create a problem. Go with the yogurt first and the oatmeal later. Oatmeal bloats up the pouch. Think dense protein; tuna, eggs, yogurt, chicken. Trial and error...
Obviously I am still learning, but the oatmeal was made with milk to add protein....had as much as the yogurt anyway. Also, I have been eating yogurt for 2 weeks already, as OK'd by the doc, so I was looking for something new.
According to my progam I am not supposed to eat eggs until I get to the regalar diet phase next week.
The thought of tuna, chicken or beans for breakfast kind of grosses me out!

"...oatmeal (pureed) with a bit of Splenda brown sugar..."
Does Splenda really have a "fake" brown sugar?? The only Splenda brown sugar in my area is a 50 / 50 mix of Splenda and real brown sugar.
SugarTwin used to have a great "fake" brown sugar but I haven't seen that offered for a couple of years.
I'm kinda surprised that you're doing oatmeal so soon. My doctor only added that or Cream of Wheat to my diet after I was 1 month post-op. And, they are restricted to once a week to help regulate the bowels.
But, I had to laugh when you said that you made too much. That was a normal think for me and it's a hard habit to break. I also have trouble shopping for food. Instead of getting one of an item, I'm still automatically grabbing 2-3 cans or packages and sticking them in the cart.

The Splenda Brown Sugar is a 50/50 mix, but it only has 2g of sugar in a full serving......I used about 1 serving for the whole bowl I made then proceeded to eat about 1/10 of it.......all in all, not a great deal of sugar added.
The Oatmeal has to be thinned out with milk (or water) and put through the blender to make it 'ok' to eat. But I prefer that to Cream of Wheat.

Thanks for the clarification on the brown sugar. I obviously didn't look at the label but only 2g of sugar in a full serving isn't bad at all. In fact, some of the protein shakes and bars have 2g of sugar in a full serving. You're right that with our portion sizes, it's not a lot of added sugar.
Sounds like you have this covered well. I do agree it's better to try to get the protein in. I mix a scoop of protein powder in with my yogurt and oatmeal or other "protein" cereal (Kashi, Special K) You will like have to wait a while to add those other cereals.
Another option is yogurt, protein mix, and a banana in the blender. Makes it a little thicker and more like food than a drink.
Just take it easy and slow as you can tolerate the softs.
Keep up the great work and progress! Mike
