OT: ( Long) NFL Eagles fans are not wusses!
The former mayor of Philly, current Gov Rendel was stating last night that he couldn't believe that the NFL postponed the Eagles game from last night to Tues night. I believe he was acting in his capacity as an Eagles season ticket holder ( he's been a fan of their's for over 20 years and doesn't even try to be neutral when the Eagles play the Steelers). Before Sun gametime, he was saying that it would be no problem for people from Montgomery County to get to the game. That might have been true if the stadium were in Montgomery but it's in Phila County.
I heard Eagles' reps today saying that they got far more calls thanking them for their decision than criticizing them. Fully 1/3 of the ticket holders are from NJ and NJ got between 12-28 inches of snow in areas that follow the Eagles. Getting out at the end of the game would have been horrid. First people would have had to clean their cars, exit the parking lots, drive through the trecherous streets of S Philly--not because of crime-- but, rather because they are narrow streets lined with row homes that do not have driveways. Therefor, everyone parks on the street and the plows have a difficult time navigating those streets. Finally, the people from NJ would have to get on I-95 and eventually cross one of the bridges into NJ = icy conditions. Almost all of I-95 is raised off the ground in Philly and freezes quickly.
I don't go to any games in person, but I think the powers that be made the right decision for a change. Oh, and I had to laugh at the Eagles players who were incredulous over the postponement. Most of them live in NJ because of quirks in the tax laws in Philly. They end up paying less taxes if they live in NJ and do some work in Philly. Of course, in anticipation of games, they drive their vehicles to parking in the stadium on the day before the game and are sequestered in a hotel room together that night. They get a bus ride to the stadium. If the game had been played, they would have been taken back to a hotel on Sun night and gone back to the stadium the following day for their vehicles.
Finally, the Mayor and the Governor were originally urging fans to take public transportation. But, all public transportation in philly and NJ was halted about when the game would have been in half time..
Thank god that the Eagles front office and the NFL have people with brains and foresight working there. Bob

Although Gov Rendel had his backers and produced laughs with his remarks, the team said they were flooded with responses that were overwhelming praising them and th NFL for the decision to postpone the game. Many people cited the reasons I gave. A recurring popular theme was of parents who had bought tickets for Christmas and had to face the prospect of being mean (yet properly protective) if they didn't go or of appearing reckless in front of other parents. That decision was removed.
