Was having surgery a good idea?

Hell yeah!

I am having a great holiday. I'm off work Christmas Eve through Monday.  When I weighed 500 plus pounds I hated the holidays. It meant little more than a reason that I was forced to get up on my painful arthritic knees and break into a sweat when I waited in lines at the store. Then I dreaded seeing people that I hadn't seen in a while, believing that the only thing they would think about me was how fat I was.

This year was so different.  I got all the shopping I needed to do with ease and managed to hit the gym almost every day. I even rode my bicycle about fifteen miles last weekend.

This morning (the day after Christmas) I got up around 5am. I took my pills ate my breakfast, shoveled the driveway, went to three department stores to buy a coat that was on sale, and went to the gym and was back home by 8AM.  Everyone else here is still sleeping.

I write this down to remind myself how grateful I am for my weight loss surgery and all the support from you on this board.

Happy holidays and happy new year!

Celebrate!  You are an inspiration.  Me too - I'm so happy I had the surgery.  110 pounds less of me makes life easier to live, for sure.

I'm right there with you Herc!

WLS, my RNY, was one of the BEST things I've ever done.  A year ago, I was at my highest weight ever and on my way to an early grave and terribly unhealthy.

Today, i am not only at my desired goal weight, I spend an hour in the gym 5 days per week, do a long run on the 6th day, usually Saturday.  I am training to run a Marathon in 2011.  I won't bore you all again with the long list of RESOLVED health issues and Meds I am no longer taking.

Correction...HELL NO, WLS wasn't a "good" idea...it was a GREAT idea!

I too am so grateful for all the encouragement and support I get from this OH Men's Forum!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Mike

I'm not as far along in this journey as you and MIke. But, in the past couple of months the change in how I'm feeling is amazing. I can't believe I waited so long do this.

But, on the other hand, when I first started looking into this about 5 years ago the doctors were suggesting lap band. I'm much happier with the RNY choice over lap band.

So far the holidays have been great. As Herc said the shopping was much easier. I'm able to do more. Even leaving today for a week in the mountains doing cross country skiing and some snowmobile trips. I couldn't do that last year.

High Weight = 310     Surgery Weight = 300   Dr's Goal = 200   My Goal = 190
