It's official - no longer a "couch potato"...

This morning, I started the C25K (Couch to 5K) training program.  After a 5 minute warm-up walk, I alternated jogging 100 steps with walking 200 steps for 20 minutes, then did a 5 minute cool-down walk.  Other than the inevitable reports of minor earthquakes and numerous aftershocks being reported by residents in my neighborhood, it was reasonably uneventful.

Who knew that you could "forget" how to run?  It's been probably 20-25 years since the last time I ran (Ok - jogged), and I guess I had forgotten how to "stride" correctly.  It took a while to re-learn how to avoid that initial "jolt" when your foot strikes the ground.  (Hence the earthquake reports...)

Anyway, the dogs loved it - and didn't want to stop after 100 steps - and I survived.  Started feeling a little bit of knee pain just at the end of my last jog, but the cool-down worked it out.  Guess that's why the program has you only doing this 3 times a week.

Thanks to all of you "veterans" who inspired me to start this thing...  And to my friends at work who asked me to do the 5K HeartWalk with them in the spring.  I told them last week that I would not be able to walk with them after all - because I was going to RUN it!  They were so happy for me - but also a little doubtful, I suspect.  More motivation to make it happen.

I OWN THIS THING!

I'm impressed but I would be just as impressed if you were to walk the distance.  As to running, I can't.  But, I still say that I have to run to the bathroom and that gets my friends laughing so hard that they almost fall out of their seats.

EXCELLENT NEWS!

Jim you have such a great attitude towards this that there is no doubt you own this race.  Remember your first race will always be a Personal Record and the simple fact that you start is one of the biggest victorious in this process.  Good luck in your training.

You GO JIM!!!!  I am so proud and happy for you bud!  The C25K is a great program!  And you take it at your pace one day at a time adding some each time you go out.  Before you know it, you will have ran/jogged the entire distance...Some aches and pains are "normal" as you get used to the exercise.  Just don't over do...for us 'older' guys the old 'no pain no gain" adage is a bunch of CRAP!!!  If you start hurting walk.  Give yourself some Rest Days.  Remember you are doing this for your health and for the 'fun' of it...Be sure to check out the Exercise and Fitness Forum...lotsa good advice...RUN ON!!!!  Mike
Eating junk food and CRAP is not a reward...it's a punishment...
it's a DEATH sentence...Reward yourself with Good Health!

Thanks, Mike.  You're always so encouraging.  And good advice on the "no pain no gain" stuff.  Towards the end of my last "run" (more of a fast waddle by that point - LOL) my knee started to hurt just a little bit, and I decided to just slow to a really fast walk.  I realize that a) I'm still well over 100 lbs overweight, and b) I'm over 55, and c) I haven't run in 25-30 years.  I've got a lot of "re-learning" to do.  But the important thing is to do just a little bit more every day.

Today, the dogs and I walked the full 2-mile course, and for the first time actually broke 40 minutes (3 mph).  A new PR!  (LOL - sounds silly claiming a PR for 3 mph walking, but I'll take it!)

THAT'S AWESOME!!!

Must be something in the air, Jim...I hit the treadmill for the first time yesterday myself.

I tried to C25K program 5 months ago, and couldn't get through the first 30 second run because my shins locked up and my knees hurt horribly.

Then yesterday: my own little miracle!  I ran for 30 second intervals.  Then I ran for 45 seconds at a time, Then I put in a few 90 second runs with 1 minute rests in between!!!

I couldn't believe it.  It was a great feeling--just as great as the aching thighs, calves, and shins this morning.

Accomplishments are great, and huge motivators.

Thanks to all on the board who continue to inspire me.

Way to go, Chad!  I'm thinking that I'll be doing it on the treadmill for a while myself...  We live out in the boonies, and the roads here are all gravel - and very loose gravel at that.  I'm worried because I almost turn an ankle about a half-dozen times a day.  And the other day I stepped on a decent-sized rock that actually caused a bruise on the bottom of my foot.  Annoying and painful, but ultimately not a good enough excuse to become a couch potato again.  LOL  I'm loving the way I'm feeling these days.  Can't wait to see how it feels when I've lost 100 lbs, then 150, then...  But for now, I'm just enjoying life!
