I'm back after a long absence

Had RNY June 2005, took off 135 pound and bounced back 35 pounds. Still fighting the cravings and working on exercise. I know that pastries, chips and booze are no good for me but are hard to resist.

Welcome back and welcome to the club regarding problems with white flour.  Besides posting here, you may want to look at the RNY Forum and the WLS graduates Forum.  The RNY Forum has good info, but sometimes it's as busy as the main forum.  Also, they are starting to get some posts about topics other than RNY (usually female issues).  Still, when things are slow on the Men's Forum, you may want to see if any posts there may help you.  The WLS Graduates Forum is geared to long term post-ops and is not limited to people who have no problems with their recovery.  Just the opposite is true.  They do admit their problems with food and staying on the program.  Some of the people there try to provide daily accountability for their eating.  Others are successful ans share what works for them.

What I'm trying to say is that I know many long term post-ops that continue to have difficulty with certain food temptations.  For those of us who are food addicts, these temptations are likely to last until our final breath.  But we can enjoy success along the way.  A very wise woman advised me just last week that I can figuratively be careful to look for the cracks in the ground but to be careful not to fall into the canyons.  Dam, I'll have to look up her exact wording because it's on an e-mail that I saved.  Anyway, even if we go back to compulsive or impulsive eating, we can ( we DEFINITELY can) become abstinate from our addictive foods again.  This may be a problem that we will repeat for various lengths of time throughout our lives.

Have hope!  Don't give up.  I strongly urge people having these problems to get Dr Judith Beck's book, the Beck Diet Solution Weight Loss Workbook.  It's a self help book that provides over 3 dozen strategies for following lifetime diets ( as opposed to quick short term diets).  You don't have to follow all of her suggestions, but she asks that you at least try them in the order in which they are written in the book.  I suggest getting a notebook ( any notebook) to write down your answers in working on those strategies.  Bob
