Old Timers!!!!!

 Hello everyone,
First off let me say I'm not trying to open any old wounds or stir the old pot. I just wish that some of the old timers were still here. You know who I'm talking about (DXE, Paul, Baja, Scott) I know alot of you don't know me or remember me. These guys were so much help when I started this journey. The one thing that I miss was how there was no BS handed out on this board. Just straight no nonsence advice. I used to envy these guys looking at their weightloss totals, thinking I would never get there. Well if any of my old mentors are still watching it's been an awesome ride so far. In all I've lost over 230lbs and have kept over 200 of it off. I'm over two yrs. out now. Dx I'd think it would be great to here from you. Scott Ian I don't guess I needed that 5X jacket I got from you it got passed on to the next guy, Carhart makes tough coats!!! Paul in Dallas the insurance paperwork you helped with worked like a charm!!! One day real soon I'm gonna get some pictures up. That's one thing I didn't take good advice on and keep a good album of photos guys don't miss out there.
                                                                         Thanks Fella's, Don

Don, that's fantastic!  I haven't seen those names on the forum in the last couple of months, but there are several others who've been around for a while.  Hopefully they'll chime in shortly.  I too appreciate the "no BS" approach the guys on this forum have, and the occasional "tough love" that is handed out.  I'm going to make sure I take some pictures soon, and get them posted.  Thanks for the reminder!

Best of luck to you, Don!

I contacted one of these old times and asked him to come back.  But, I just gave an informal invitation and mentioned the need for his expertise.  I also promised not to let anyone know how I contacted him--it took a bit of internet research combined with my memories.  That's strange because most of you know that I have fairly poor memory.

I know what you mean.  But, we have to move on.  It was like a death of a old dear friend...But we are here for the living (the new guys).
For those of you new guys who don't know...a couple of years ago there was a falling out on the Men's Forum...Obesity Help management started putting down some of the wisest, most mature OH members on this site...One who even helped found OH.  They took the profits, then started to rip him!!  Half the men left...The ones with alot of knowledge...This forum was not the same.  Some of us are trying to build it back up.  I like to be here for both the support (from a guys prospective...hard to talk about your prostate on the Main Board) and I want to give back and help the new men going through WLS...The 1001 questions.  Brian

i personally can say if it wasnt for some of the guys on this board things would have been very hard for me. So i can imagine where you are coming from because i would like to think that some of the people on this board are now considered friends and i am sure talking to your friends would be great again. Thanks to everyone that has helped me, i have a long road but i know i can make it with everyones help

Brian, you are one of the "masters" us "rookies" look up to, and you've already contributed tremendously to my progress!  I'll be eternally grateful to all the "old timers" who hang out to reassure us, inspire us, and occasionally show us "tough love" when we need it.  To all of you - Thanks!

Brian - thanks for the history.  As I am still less than 1 year post-op, I do rely on your's and others experience and knowledge.  Sorry to hear about the rif with those who started this.  I sincerely appreciate the advice and support I've received on this forum and only hope I am able to give a little back in return.  I don't like the support groups at my surgeon's practice.  They are mostly women, talking about women's stuff, that while its good for them, I'm not interested and I just don't like some of the whinning.  This site is my support group and it works for me so THANK YOU to those who've gone before!  Let's try to keep it going for each other and those who follow us!

Hey Don...

Not sure what constitutes and old timer but I've been around a few years, just don't have a ton of time to get on here lately as my personal life is...well....crazy.

Anyway, great work on the weightloss and maintenance...keep it up...

Take it easy...

How do I say this?  I am an old-timer.  I joined ObesityHelp.com in July 2000 and had my first RNY on 11-14-2000 ( I had a second RNY on 01-21-2005 due to a staple line disruption; it was as if I had never had the original surgery).  My starting weight was around 571 but it wasn't important to me then to know exactly what I weighed.  Heck, I'm manic-depressive and for years I thought that I'd just die from a heart attack.  Luckily most of my family is heart healthy.  I have managed to maintain a weight loss of over 200 lbs but it has fluctuated.

My problems stem from eating high carb snacks, lack of exercise, and my mental/emotional situation.  I've realized that sometimes when I feel like I'm going to "climb the walls" with my insane desire for junk food that I'm actually better off having a small sample of it.  This only partially works because it may take months before I am able to get completely "clean" after that.  However, I've finally decided to treat myself with the same kindness and mercy that I would show someone else.  I've found that I can continue to lose weight ( or at least not gain any) as long as I am trying.

NOW I DO HAVE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE FROM BEING HERE FOR 10 YEARS.  I can give advice and know a lot of what works and what doesn't work.  In the past year I've finally started exploring other Forums and can often advise other men where to look for specific needs or problems.  For example, many old timers who are really into exercise only post on the exercise Forum.  Others don't know about the Diet and Nutrition Forum ( which is not a discussion group--go look at it some time).  These forums stay on point and they generally don't discuss "female" issues.

Men can go elsewhere in ObesityHelp for other problems but still know that they have the comfort of the Men's Forum to discuss male problems.  As you grow post-op, I encourage you to keep coming here to help other men.

I remember when Herc was pre-op.  He came here with all of the questions that most other newbies have.  He posted often and I tried to answer him as best as I could.  I encouraged him to keep posting here as he proceded along his WLS journey and I thank him for doing so.  I sincerely believe that it helps newbies to post often and see who else is in your same situation or who is a little behind you in the process.  You have a responsiblity to help them along.  Your impressions of what works for you are more relatable since you have just been through that stage.  In this manner, we build up this site.

I also encourage you to Contact other men with similar situations.  You may develop some online friends.  I originally looked for other supermorbidly obese men to contact because I initially couldn't relate to someone who was starting his journey at a weight below my goal.  I have a few online friendships here that have gone on for almost 10 years.  I now relate to many more of you and don't see our problems as being defined by a particular weight.

Maybe I can help and maybe I can't.  I try to be fair and straightforward with my answers.  I even reread most of my responses before submitting them since I tend to ramble on.  Yeah, I know my faults.  I'm sorry when I offend someone and try to apologize asap either in the forum or through direct contact.

I want to encourage all of the male lurkers to contribute posts here.  I don't mind that women read our forum as long as they don't post.  Some of the attractions of our Forum are that we tend to stay on point with discussions of WLS, diet, and exercise.  To women who want to contribute to Forums that don't wander too far from these subjects, I suggest that they go to individual surgery type forums and the hunger and food problems forums.  They don't run anywhere as fast as the Main Forum.  Granted if you have a problem and want it answered right now, you'll get fast feedback there.

I think I've said enough this time.  Bob
