Hit a 8-day stall at 3 weeks out. Is this to be expected?

I haven't lost a pound in 8 days now and, although I've heard of stalls, this is driving me crazy.  I feel like the transition from liquids only to now cream of wheat, cooked beans, and other foods with carb content is keeping me from losing weight.   I also find I'm getting hungry more often and eatiing about 5 times a day (about a cup of real mushy food at each sitting).  I'm easily getting in +80 grams of protein in every day but may only be getting in 1/2-3/4 of my 64oz of water.   Can the increase in solid food and decrease in liquids be causing this?  Or is this my body just storing up all the carbs in response to all the initial weight loss?

Yes stalls can occur pretty much at aytime and even more so when you drop a lot of weight real fast.  The one thing I have found to help get me through these periods is pay attention to how things fit.  you may not lose a pound but may drop a pant size or more.

I am not sure what your surgeons protocol calls for but a full cup of even mushies at 8 days seems a lot.  I am 15 weeks and still around 1/2 to 2/3 a cup and until monday was mushies because of other issues.  At 8 days out I believe my protocol had me at less than 1/4 cup per meal with 4 meals a day. Don't worry about the carbs in the beans and such at this point, beans are complex carbs and do carry some protein.  They will also keep the party moving  if you understand what I am saying.

As for the hunger you are probably getting head hunger as it is still to soon for you to experience physical hunger.  Years of over eating have conditioned us to listen to brain telling us when to eat as opposed to our body.  If you feel you are hungry drink some fluids for 30 minutes, if you are still hungry eat an SF popsicle, 30 minutes after that if your still hungry then eat a small meal.

Going from solid to liquids probably has little to do with it as calories are calories if you have 500 calories in liquid versus 500 of solid you still have 500 calories.

You are doing great so far, stick to your surgeons plan and you will make it through.

Stalls are comon , don't let them drive you crazy. Stay on plan and you'll be fine. It's not possible for you to eat enough to hinder your weightloss this early out. Stay off your scale for a while for your own sanity.

Thanks so much for posting about the stall. I'm almost 4 weeks out and have noticed a real slow-down (almost a stall) in the past week. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

On a positive note, although the scales aren't moving I still seem to be dropping inches. I've taken in the same pair of jeans twice this week and added two new holes to my belt. Can't complain with those results.

A co-worker who is 8 months post-op told me that he lost in cycles. The scales would drop one week and then stall. During the stall week the inches would come off. Then the cycles started again with weight loss and no inch loss followed by inch loss and no weight loss.

Unfortunately, I'm not getting as much protein in my diet as you. I think it's amazing that you're getting +80 grams per day. Sounds like you're on the right road

The one thing that would break a stall for me...Hard physical work.  For some reason with exercise, my body would hold on to the weight for awhile.  But by doing things like cleaning the gutters or cleaning out the car...My body would drop the weight...Strange I know (but true for me).

I know with VSG a three week stall is very common. I had it at three weeks. i also had one at five months that lasted a month. Stalls are part of the process.

Best bit of adivce I can give is stay on program and don't get discouraged. You'll need to ride it out. I would also make sure that you track your measurements. I found that during a stall eventhough I didn't lose on the scale I lost inches. It's just as motivating to see you lose inches as it is to see losing pounds.

It really helps to hear from you guys who hit a stall early out.  I expected stalls later but not so soon.  Did you guys change anything in your diet to overcome the stalls at some point?  I'm really questioning my diet right now.  I stated in my original post that I'm getting in +80 grams of protein easily. Well, that's because, in addtion to a protein shake a day,  I'm eating foods with protein, like beans, low fat string cheese, cottage cheese, egg whites, plus oatmeal and cream of wheat.  Most of these foods come with with mucho added carbs and calories. I log what I'm taking in and I'm exceeding 60 carbs a day and ranging from 900 =1200 calories a day.  And to top that all, I have not lost an inch in my waistline, but I've not gained any either.

I guess what I'm asking is this "just a stall", or am I eating too friggin much?  My wife commented to me last night that I used to eat 2 full plates of beans and rice at a sitting. Now I eat about 1 cup at a sitting. So I'm  confused. I'd like to stay on the diet I'm on because I can get my protein more from food and less from protein drinks and shakes (of which I'm growing tired of).

"...I guess what I'm asking is this "just a stall", or am I eating too friggin much?"

I really think you've hit your first stall. But, I amazed at the amount you're eating.

My doc said that my pouch was sized to hold about 2 oz. So, his instructions to me were to only take 2 oz per meal x 3 meals per day. However, I think your intake would depend on the size of your pouch and your doc is the best one to confirm the portion size for you.

Another question that has come up on my local forum board is what constitutes 2 oz of food. When you drink V8 juice (for example) is that part of your water content or is tha part of your 2 oz of food? One of the docs has a hard rule of measurement.

"Water is water. Anything else is food." Boy, that's a hard definition that I struggle with.

In short, find out your pouch size from your doc and follow his instructions for you. My body and yours are not the same and our medical histories are different.

I'm sure what you're experiencing is just "normal" for you.
