Prostate issue anyone?
Immediately after my RNY, my surgeon told me that I should not be taking such a large pill. (Actually, an Avodart is only about 5/8" long and about 3/16" in diameter). So he and my PCP agreed on a substitute medication called Proscar. The Proscar is a much smaller pill than Avodart, and has the advantage of being available as a generic.
So I've been taking the Proscar for about two months. Well, lately I've found myself having a very weak urine stream, and also having to go pee a couple of times each night. It's scary to think that stopping the Avodart could have had such a rapid (and negative) result, but that's what the evidence suggests.
Anyway, about four weeks post-op I found I could swallow pretty large pills whole. I'm currently talking Centrum multivitamins and the big Costco calcium citrate horse pills. So, obviously, I can now once again re-tolerate a capsule the size of Avodart. I have a meeting with my PCP tomorrow and I hope to get him to OK the switch back.
Does anyone out there have any sort of similar experience with prostate size? What has worked for you?
I do recommend getting Male Guards as added protection. The package says to tape them to the inside of jockey shorts but I don't tape them and I have friends who use them satisfactorily with boxer shorts. They also come in handy when you are wearing light colored pants and are afraid of a stain from a few drips. I also know people who wear them on airplane flights. They don't take the place of going to the bathroom, but they can hold a few ounces of fluid.
I had RNY in Decemer 2009 and had some problems with needing to get up every couple of hours at night to go. A few years ago I was told I had an enlarged prostate and was given Flowmax for a few months. In June 2010 (6 months postop) I spent the night in the hospital while they put a cathoder in to drain my bladder. My prostate had enlarged enough that it cut off my unrine flow and I was unable to go for 2 to 3 days. Long story short, I am now having a biopsy on November 15th and if there is no indication of cancer, the doctor is recommending Green Light Laser treatment.
The Urologist that I am seeing now (problems with the first one) asked a lot of questions about rapid weight loss and upon learning about my RNY he immediately changed how many times a day I take my medication due to the ability to absorb them.
This is an issue that my father and brother both have and now it is my turn I guess.
