Anyone heard about...?
I've heard conflicting reports lately on the usage of two supplements I've been taking. Fish Oil and Probiotics.
I'm RnY, by the way.
Someone told me that fish oil is primarilly absorbed in the section of bowl which was removed, and therefore isn't very useful to be taking. Any thoughts?
I also am a huge fan of taking probiotics. I take a capsule once a day. I also eat a lot of raw and/or cultured milk products (Keffir, Yogurt). I've noticed that they're very helpful. Anyone out there have an opinion?

Just my 2 cents...The fish oil would be mostly for the heart. Not sure about absorption...We are always wondering where the absorption occures....Esp absorption of drugs. I eat alot more fish post RNY. I get several Healthy Choice Lemon Fish Dinners at the store and have 2 or 3 a week. But I've also had 2 heart attacks...That's why I eat them. I will nibble on some probiotics throughout the day...I also nibble on a B-Complex pill and have a small amount of fish oil daily...but I'm strange in that way. I also take 1 iron pill a day and nibble on 2 others (different iron formulas). All my labs are good, so I'm not cutting back. We're walking guinea pigs in many ways. Brian
Prior to my surgery, I began taking fish oil and noticed my lipid panel really improved. After surgery, my surgeon said I really didn't need to take them, so I stopped. I've noticed a slow but noticeable trend upwards in my triglycerides and LDL's. After my labs 6 months ago, I started taking the fish oil again and am due for labs again next week, so we'll see how I respond.
I've never been a fish person AT ALL. But, I realized I really should have some as part of my diet. I've been eating talapia quite a bit lately. My favorite way to make it is to tear off some foil, place the frozen tilapia on the foil and top with whatever veggies I have available (today was cabbage, green onions, celery, carrots, red bell pepper, zucchini, garlic), a lemon slice, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, pepper, rosemary, wrap it up into a packet and grill for 20 minutes. Comes out perfectly cooked, flaky, and moist every time. Pretty tasty too.

you might try cromega (spelling)..it's fish oil that has been predigested or broken down a bit. You can buy them at most health food stores or www.vitalady.com RNY and DSers absorb less fat then most normal people, but as a RNYer you certainly absorb more fat then I do, you might want to try just upping the doses, plus eating fish on a regular basis.

PS as for probiotics, if you can stomach them, they are suppose to be good for you. Go for the ones that have billions of organisms vs the ones that have a few million.

I don't know if that is true with RNYers, so I will defer to one of them on that question .. I do know that fish oil / Omegas are practically useless for us DSers, since we malabsorb all fats/oils - friend or foe - so badly .. ![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/frown.gif)
btw, ltns Cartman .. how how you been???

Thanks for asking! I've been doing really great. Life has just turned into a whirl-wind lately. I thought I ought to start stalking the forum again to bring some accountability to my eating. No problems, but with everything else in change, I can't be too careful.
My wife had our third baby three weeks ago (baby boy), and I've started a new job teaching music at an elementary Waldorf school. I'm super excited, but feeling stressed out. It'll all work out as soon as we get back in a rhythm.

Glad to hear things are going so well for you ..![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/smile.gif)
btw, I stand corrected on the fish oil thing .. Apparently there are some dry formulations out there that are absorbable for post-ops.
I had asked about this last week on the DS forum (please ignore the ignorant responses to my post, btw
