Weight Loss + Weightlifting
When I am down a bit more from where I currently am I plan on doing some weight training. The reason I don't do it now is that even though I know muscle weighs more than fat and I am losing fat and gaining muscle, stalls in the scale frustrate me.
Very early on in my attempts to get healthy I Weighed 350 and hired a personal trainier. In 1 year I had lost 10 pounds total. I was more fit than I ever had been in my adult life, lost a couple pant sizes and could probably tip my little car over. Even with all of that I saw only a 10 pound drop as a failing which made it difficult.
I also know that I need to start weights to retain some of the muscle mass I currently have and not lose it as well.
One step at a time right.

I hear you, Paul.
In my case I was more worried about health than weight (even though they typically go hand in hand). The gym was a way to have a tangible measure of whether or not I worked towards my goals that day. It's also making a huge boost in my metabolism.
Back ten or so years ago I got down to about 210, but my body looked sickly and weird with a large frame with no meat on it! This time I'm hoping to do the same thing, as far as fat, but bulking up a lot. This time there's no fooling around!
I did read a lot of muscle-building sites that recommend going about it your way: losing fat then building muscle or vice versa. They warned against trying to do both at the same time. Of course I'm so much smarter than everyone else. Haha, oh well, so far it's working for me.

Adding muscle helps you burn more calories while you are at rest. That in it's self will help you loose some fat while you add the muscle. The legs are helpful because they are typically pretty strong before surgery. Keeping them strong will help.
