Do you tell people about your surgery

I'm a member of a local support group. (all women)  They have a lot of discussion about whether to tell people they had WLS.  Sometimes it gets very heated.

I just don't get it.. Who cares.. I'd tell anyone who's interested. Plus.. I really think it's pretty obvious. Like everyone knew we were fat..and  The weight loss is very dramatic.. Plus if you share any meals with family and friends it's also got to be pretty obvious (especially in the early stages)

Is this just a woman thing.. or did some of you guys keep it a big "secret" too

I didn't keep it a secret.

I told anyone that wanted to listen.  But also the people that saw me everyday knew something was up.

I would rather someone know that I had surgery instead of people thinking that I was really ill!!

Had a little old lady, literally, ask me couple of weeks ago if I had been sick!

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!

My wife thinks I'm too free with providing info on my surgery.  Usually I'll tell wait-staff that I want a box for left over food because I had gastric bypass surgery.  Most say that they hear that often.

2 Days till I have mine and the main people outside of family are those I work with on a daily basis and rely on me.  This mainly happened due to needing the time off to follow the plan to get insurance approval, but other people noticed a change in my habits, while still others heard through the rape vine.  For some I had to explain what I was having done as a couple thought I was having something like lipo done.

Personally I don't see a problem with it.

I didn't tell anyone except my wife and business partner.   Now that its been a couple of years, most people I know are used to seeing the 'new' me, so the questions about 'how are you losing weight' (answer: eating right and smaller portions) are largely a thing of the past.    Maybe some people wonder if I had surgery, but I figure most don't really care, and that's fine by me.  WLS is a personal decision, and so is who, or if, you tell.  Kudos if you want to tell everyone, it just wasn't something I wanted to share with the world.  To each his own...

I've told those who I need to tell, family, boss, etc.. but otherwise I'm not broadcasting. I'm not keeping it a secret just not announcing. I've already lost about 40 before surgery and I am getting the double takes. It will be a hoot after surgery to watch that. If someone asks I'll probably tell then all about it.

I am still pre-op (struggling with the RNY or Lapband decision) but have only told my wife, children, boss and one family member. The reasoning so far is that nothing is certain yet. Once I get a date I may tell more people (co-workers etc) and post-op I'll play it by ear.

I'm scheduled for VSG on 8/9. I'm not telling anyone other than my wife. My kids are small; I'll tell them when they are old enough to understand. I struggle with not telling my mom. She and I are extremely close but she will worry and try to talk me out of it so I've decided against it. I told my boss that I have a surgical procedure scheduled and needed to be out for a week.

WLS is personal ... not a secret so much as a choice to be discreet.

I haven't told anyone, because people just don't do it here in Japan. However, nearly 4 years is really unusual, so some of the other westerns seem to be suspecting SOMETHING. I get stuff like, "Well, I guess you won't have to worry about that anymore" from them.
