I am a over the road truck driver, i am getting the open RNY and am wondering if there are any other drivers that has had the surgery, and about how long it took to get back in the truck?

Hard to say...I will mention a few things that men in general face.  Since you will be going open, it will be a longer recovery than lap RNY...They are cutting into more muscle.  You way be losing sometimes 10 pounds a week...It can really drain you physically.  You will try and grab for energy and it just won't be there.  Before I could grab a candybar or something.  Also your eating habits and style will change.  Most doctors will not want any heavy lifting for over a month usually...don't know if you have to do your own lumpping...  There is a good chance you may lose some muscle mass.  With the rapid weightloss can also come some loss of strength.  I know there is at least one trucker on this board who probably will respond.  I do know a couple of truckers (post RNY), after having lost much of their weight, have taken a bicycle with them on the road.  One guy made a special frame placed on the back of his cab.  Brian

Our UnitedDude (Unidos) has done just that ..   Hopefully he will chime in here ...

We also had another member that did the same thing about a year or two ago ..  He has done great and lost a ton of weight ..  (does anyone remember his username?   He's the member I gave my "big" suit to right after his surgery   ) ..   He checks in here from time to time ..

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

HW/461 LW/251 GW/189 CW/274 (yep, a DS semi-failure - it happens :-( )

I'm a bridge carpenter. I was an open DS. I was back at work right at 6 weeks. At about 85-90%

Hey Driver!!!

I didn't have open RNY but I would take as much time off as you can.   Just think of how you will feel after you crank your landing gear up and down a few times a day on those drop and hooks or trying to pull the hood open.

Hope you have a fride on your truck cause, loves, TA, Pilot and flying j have nothing WLS friendly.  I have to shop at Walmart when I am out there. No fridge for me so I have 12v cooler and keep a case of water behind the seat.

Glad you are doing something cause DOT is cracking down on driver health.

I am off the road for now, my co-driver hit a low bridge in Milwakee WI..(jack ass)

Hello Rich ..... Ive been a OTR driver a while back    Im now a P/D  Driver for a LTL co. I also swing alot of freight around on deliveries.. I had a DS lap, and I was out 6 weeks because Im required to lift 70lbs... Muscle loss and energy levels were and still is a problem for me at 7 mos out. But Im doing ok. Just cant carry the usual heavy items that were no problem for me pre-op. As Unidos mentioned eating and having good choices will be a challenge on the road. My advice and experiences are.... protien and water is very important. There are times I slack on them and I can feel the difference. You will feel sluggish and water is a big factor on the digestion process... With the small amount we eat we dont ge****er from  what we eat.. Hell I drink water even if Im not thirsty... Good luck to you.
