No weight loss the 2nd wk after RNY ?!
I hope someone out there can help.. My husband had RNY 16 days ago. The very first week he lost 30 pounds. But this week he has lost nothing... I mean absolutely NOTHING, not one ounce. Is this common?! He is horribly distraught and thinks that he has made the worst decision of his entire life. In 18 yrs of marriage I've never seen, or heard, him this upset. I'm trying to console him, but I don't know what to say. He is doing everything "by the book"- drinking the fluids, eating the right foods in the right quantities, walking 2-3 times per day, etc. I don't know where else to turn for advise and I know he does NOT want to hear from a woman. He just went out for his morning walk, so I thought I would take this opportunity to try to find some answers/support.
First of all he lost 30 pounds in 2 weeks, that is wonderful. Second, tell him to stay off of the scale until his 3 month doctors visit. RNY works, but everyone's body does it at a different pace. If he doesn't stay off the scale he will drive himself totally crazy. We all lose large amounts of weight, then our bodies readjust and our weightloss stalls, then we lose again. The stalls in the first 4 or 5 months can last a week or 2, after that a stall can last up to a month, but even in a stall he will be losing inches.
During the first 2 weeks, his body and the nerves haven't even healed yet. He will feel much different in week 3 or 4.

Right now he is not interested in posting. He has never blogged in his life and is feeling pretty miserable about everything right now. That's why I took the chance of being a rogue female in a "man's forum". I'm trying to get information in the hopes that when I have something concrete to show him he will embrace this site and move forward on his own. Right now I'm just a scared wife looking for answers. Is there somewhere where I can pull up the men's post ops you were referring to? Are they all in one place or do we just read through all the postings from beginning to end?
He works outside of the US a large percentage of the time. As a matter of face he is scheduled to leave for Europe in 10 days. I'm desperate to get him feeling better about everything and on a smoother path before he gets on that plane.
And yes, I am ready to throw that &*(%$ scale out the window!! It's making both of us crazy!! Thank you again for getting back with me. I greatly appreciate all of the information.
When he is not looking throw the scale, he probably wore it out already anyway LOL. You two can laugh about it a couple of years from now.
If you want to friend me go ahead, then I can give you my e-mail. If he doesn't feel comfortable on the site maybe he and I can communicate by e-mail. I can help him with his questions.

I don't think responding to a post in a Forum is blogging. However, we really don't want women posting here. There are easily over 150,000 people in ObesityHelp and the vast majority are women. This is the only Forum dedicated to men. We can't stop women from reading this forum or even from posting here, but we kindly ask that they do not post here. A singular occasion like yours is tolerable but please don't keep it up. We've had problems in the past with a very tiny number of women trying to hook up with men here. That's not why we're here.
I do thank the vast majority of woman who do respect our wishes.
Still staying on-track calorie-wise? And the scale shows you stopping? Or Even Gaining?!?!? ----------------------------Re-Post Unsolicited advice/info… -------------------------------------- Pull back from your ‘daily’ charting, and look at a weekly or even monthly. There are up and down spikes each day, But if you ‘graph’ the highest to the lowest, I’d bet there is still A downward slope over the course of the month. There’s an 8 to 10lb. volume of "wiggle room" due to water alone. And it comes into play a lot. This has to do with our bodies using glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, But it is stored in our muscles for quick energy – One pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, And the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, (Like when you drop down to your calorie intake) Your body turns first to stored glycogen, Which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, You also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it Voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of any diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, Your body starts to ‘realize’ that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue And burning fat for energy. But your body also ‘realizes’---- (by way of your liver releasing hormones signaling low Cal intake) ---That fat can't be used for short bursts of energy – Like, to outrun a saber-tooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, And rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, (Thus showing negative Calorie load overall) Your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while As you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored. Yes? The whole ‘weight-loss’ process is not a straight "Slide" down the scale. More like "Stair-Steps," (Down then forward, then down, then forward, etc... As your body cycles fat out of "deep storage" and through the Liver Into the muscles as Glycogen. The muscles and Liver can hold about a 3 weeks supply. This is why many people find that their "Stall" or "Plateau" Breaks when adding a bit of exercise And upping their water intake, or in the case of an "extreme exerciser," The total Calorie or Protein Intake, To signal the liver to let go of more Glycogen. Fear not, many people who are now enjoying life at a normal BMI Once had a few weeks or so of thinking- "...my weight loss has been awfully slow, has it stopped..."? Hope this helps some. You are doing Great! Keep it Up! Best Wishes- Dx
I lost 27 pounds on my 3 week liquid diet prior to surgery.
I had my RNY on 6/7/2010 and weighed 230. I got out of the hospital 2.5 days later and weighed 232. All fluids I'm sure.
The next 2-3 days I dropped to 220.
Then I was stuck at 216 for like a week and a half.
Today, Friday 6/25, I weighed in at 211. That's 5 pounds in about a week and a half. I too thought I would have lost a lot more considering how much biking and walking I've been doing.
But our bodies have been shocked. The body has to reset it's set point and figure out what is going on.
Make sure he's getting all his protein and water.
