Does your pouch make gastric juices

I know I probably should have this all down pat... BEFORE having surgery.. I DO KNOW that the remainder of your stomach continues to make gastric juices and is joined up with the newly routed piece of intestine that goes from your pouch to your lower intestine..

Is the pouch just a holding area?.. Normally the acids in the stomach "chew up" or further process the food on it's journey through your intestines and bowel. Does this now happen in the jejunum where the acids from the original stomach join the food?

I'm wondering why we have a 1 week pureed stage, follwed by a 1 week minced diet.. Isn't it all the same to your pouch? Isn't  it basically undigested food that travles down your jejunum.

All the post op discussion has been on the healing pouch.. but are we being careful with these bits of intestine (jejunum) that are sewn together?

Have I got this right?

I'll throw out some ideas I have heard over the years...I think I'm right...but never quite sure...Had the same questions too.  Since the pouch is taken from the top part of the stomach there are no gastic juices there...or very little.  Yet even as I type this I realize that many RNYers can still get acid reflux.  I sometimes will take some probiotics which may help with digestion.  Liquid will shoot straight through the pouch so that is why dence food needs to sit there awhile...for maximum absorption.  "Not Dave" here on the Men's Forum, still purees his chicken salad...even years out.  I will nibble on plain nuts, roasted soy nuts, and beef jerkey throughout the day...I keep them in my pockets or in the car.  I also nibble on a B Complex pill throughout the day too.  The jury still may be out on some of these things and we end up doing the things that we believe will work in the best interest for ourselves.  I try to eat the color of the rainbow now...things like blueberries and purple cabbage...Stuff I really wouldn't have looked at before...  Are we nuts or ahead of the curve?  All my labs are good...maybe ask in a year or two...when more studies will come out.  Brian

I believe the pouch only has a minimal amount of gastric juices.  I've noticed if/when I take too big a bite or don't chew well, and end up hurling, it's not like before...no bile, just alot of mucos until I clear what ever is bothering me.  I think I'm learning to heed that twinge at the base of my sternum that says "Slow down bucko or you'll be sorry"

My Dr (Surgeon), Nutritionist, and Exercise Physiologist all told me it take 6 weeks for full recovery of the internal incisions for the pouch, remnant stomach, and connection of the jejunum.  Seems to make sense.  They told me that was the primary reason for the progression from Clear Liquids, to full Liquids, to soft, to minced, then re-introduction of more solids.

I'm just at 6 weeks post-op and still have trouble with greens and veggies...but as I understand.
Eating junk food and CRAP is not a reward...it's a punishment...
