Ice Hockey and other aggressive/impact sports

Clock is ticking, I'm scheduled for RnY surgery on 5/17.  Right now, I play ice hockey several times a week.  I'm not sure how at 380lbs, but I manage to get out there.  Dr. said it should be no problem 8 weeks or so after surgery when I start feeling better.

I wanted to know, does anybody else play?  What about other aggressive sports, like football, lacrosse, etc? How is dealing with things like staying hydrated?  Ironically, changing  my eating habits, vitamins, etc. does not scare me as much as not being able to play hockey.  Isn't that wacked?  I'm looking forward to being much faster after I lose a 3rd grader or two.

Thoughts?

You shouldn't have a problem.  We have many marathoners, tri-athletes and iron-men in out midst and they find a way to stay hydrated.  Make sure you get plenty of calcium and vit D, contact sports can be hard on the bones.

Just know the signs of dehydration...Number 1 reason post op WLS people reenter the hospital.  Also you will probably lose some muscle mass...Checking may be harder, but you should be quicker and have more endurance over time...

Thanks for everybody's feedback.  I'm sure a lot of it is my weight, but I can easily drink 40oz of water after I play.  I keep hearing how its harder to drink post-op, I hope my water requirements somewhat go down.

I play in a non-contact league now, but there is still a lot of bumping and grinding.  I'm sure I'll get my clocked clean once or twice or twice.  I'll have to get used to not being 150lbs (I'm 6'1) heavier than everyone else.  Make me focus on balance ;-)

Haven't had the surgery yet, but still paranoid I could break my insides post-op.

I used to weigh 402, now 240.  I started training in Mixed Martial Arts.  For my 50th birthday, my wife sent me to a pro Cage Fighting Training Camp in Vegas at Xtreme Couture.  I wasn't the best guy, but I was a long way from the worst.  You are going to be amazed at how strong you will be.  You are used to carrying around so much weight that once it is gone, you will be amazed!
Before Surgery - 402  After Surgery 240
