Need support and a kick in the ass
WLS changes us physically but doesn't do anything to our brains. We still have the same thought processes. We may be able to change how we think about food. If you only overeat at meals, change should be easy. If you are a grazer and/or a food addict, change will be more difficult. It won't be impossible, but it will be harder.
As to your wife, you may want to discuss this whole issue with her. It may also be to your ( plural) advantage to see a counselor together to see if your losing weight affects the dynamics of your marriage. For example, I'm manic-depressive. When I am serious about trying to lose weight, my wife is supportive. However, there are many times when I feel better to allow myself to eat addictive foods. I sometimes seem to "climb the walls" when I don't have addictive foods. Do you have a food addiction and/or do you have a mental problem? We are adults and can face the possibility of mental problems. The common cold of mental illness is depression. But, depression can be minor or overpowering. Many people who begin to lose weight and change their eating style do experience some depression. If you feel this way or if your wife notices a change in your mood, you may want to make an appt with your primary doc or with a shrink. It is not uncommon to be put on a mild anti-depressant for a few months while you work through this problem. You may also need some "talk therapy." I suggest that you get a copy of the Beck Diet Solution Weight Loss Workbook. There's been significant discussion of it in the Hunger and Food Troubles Forum. There's also an OH group about Becks (no apostrophe). You can also look at my Latest Posts to see how I did work that program. Note that although I am not working that program now, I did successfully lose 50 lbs last year at 4 years post op.
