Body Building / Weight Lifting and SUPPLEMENTS after RNY

Well, I managed to find the Body Building Board here on OH, but as with many of the boards, not a post in over 2 years....haha....so I figured I'd give this a shot over here...

Do we have a resident Body Builder?

I'm looking for some advice on RNY-friendly supplements to assist in building muscle / recovery. I've been taking my regular bariatric vitamins and 2 to 3 servings of GNC Whey Protein daily for the past 2 years.....my diet is great...focused on high protein (lean meats) and lots of vegetables with minimal, almost zero, simple starches/sugars...I'm pretty sure this is why I've been able to maintain pretty decent muscle mass without being able to lift weights (doc's orders, multiple hernia repairs)...

Anyway,  I just got clearance from the doc to start lifting weights again and have been pointed in numerous directions by body building freinds, GNC staff, etc....Orange Triad.... Creatine.....SuperPump....No Xplode....so confused....haha...

Not even sure if any of this is safe with my rerouted plumbing?

Anyone wanna chime in?

I do lift regularly but take nothing beyond my normal diet so I don't feel like I can halp you much. If the men's board fails, you may find some help over on the exercise and fitness forum. You can find it under the drop down forum under WLS related. Good luck.

I am no body builder "yet" but I have been doing a lot of work in the gym. I waited almost 6 months to hit the weights after rny and that was a big mistake. In the past 3 months I have hit it hard and managed to double or triple my strength on every machine I use. There are not a lot of products to choose from due to the sugar they load in for carbs on the pre or post workout side. I have found that a high caffine drink with no sugar and a bannana b4 help to increase my energy and a high "isolate" protein after have helped a lot. I use Isopure 0 carb or the amp rtd's from gnc. I average about 150 to 200g of protein a day. The adkins and pure protein bars will also give you some carbs without much sugar to help with recovery. The adkins bars also have a lot of fiber to keep things "moving" when you add more protein in your diet.
They are high in fat though , so you may need to stick to a cardio routine to make sure you don't add fat with the muscle.

Thanks guys...I posted this on a body building forum and got some good responses...I was told first, I've gotta eat even  more....I've been maintaining my goal weight and about 15% body fat for 18 months now doing 5-6 meals a day ending up around 2500 calories....80 gm fat....200 gm protein....200 gm carbs....60 gm sugars (natural only).....so I'm going to bump that up about 20%...and the protein, about 50% (via 2 additional shakes and a bit more lean meats)....

So I hit up GNC today and switched from 100% Whey to a more absorbable form (Amplified Wheybolic 60) and also picked up some SuperPump 250....and Glutamine for recovery....the SuperPump has some Creatine in it...if I dont have any adverse reactions I'm going to buy additional Creatine and ease into that....

Hope to fill out nicely by next summer...haha....wish me luck!

I'll update this as I progress if yaal want...

Here's my before and current....after will be when i add about 20 lbs of muscle:

Keep me updated on your progress , when I get rid of my last 10-15 pounds of fat I am going to work on adding the muscle as well.

I started lifting about 6 months pre-op and haven't slowed down since. I do find that my diet is not where it should be considering where I want my body to be, bodybuilding wise.

I was drinking Myoplex Lite exclusively up until this year when I switched to Muscle Milk Protein+ powder (buy it from Costco). I'm looking into getting something else though as I'm going to start increasing my protein supps to support the Dave Palumbo cutting diet I want to try.

I need to shave off as much of this residual fat I have left around my mid-section, chest and hips so I can look better on the beach this summer!

Let me know how that protein powder works for you, I might give it a try.

So here's what I've come up with...

7:00 AM - 2 x Tribulus pills (natural, increases testosterone), Multivitamin, B12, Calcium+D, BREAKFAST (Oatmeal/PB/Banana + 1 scoop Protein)

9:30 AM - SNACK (light cheese & raw veggies), Iron, Vitamin C

12:30 PM - LUNCH (lean meat & veggies)

3:00 PM - SNACK (Oatmeal/PB/Banana + 1 scoop Protein)

5:30 PM - 1/2 HR PRE-WORKOUT: 1 scoop Protein (vanilla) & SuperPump 250 (orange) in Skim Milk (creamsicle...lol)

7:30 - POST WORKOUT: Creatine Monohydrate & Glutamine 5 gm each + DINNER (lean meat, starch, veggies)

Whats the total calories in that day? I look at these cutting diets and I'm like thinking, how the hell am I going to eat 5 Omega-3 eggs + 4 egg whites just for breakfast!!!

And these guys are like, "I'm going to be starving"...lol. I'm going to explode my pouch!

I like your diet better, although I'm curious if that's enough calories to support muscle retention.

I'm a tall and active guy so I'm supposed to eat around 3200 calories a day, just to maintain my  current weight....In the past I normally end up around 2800-3000 calories a day through 6 meals...but I'm going to have to raise that a good 20-30% now that I'm lifting....luckily I have decent capacity in my pouch (1.5 - 2.0 cups). I've been lifting for 30 years and I'm overwhelmed at all the products out there. Most of which we average people (lifters) don't need. I always stuck with just a good protein powder, a good amino acid complex, with all the Di and Tri Peptide bonded aminos, and a good multi-vitamin. All the rest is just hyped up BS !!!
