Ok hear we go guys. I know the empty calories argument and I understand it can't be a staple of ones diet but Beer is more than just a social drink for me. That is not to say I guzzle the stuff to be honest I only have a pint or 2 on avg a week. The thing is Beer is a hobby of mine I brew, its a creative outlet and something I even considered pursuing professionally. I enjoy crafting a beer and sharing it with others, just as I love to cook for other people.
I'm wondering others experiences post op with beer.

I didn't drink much before surgery and still don't but one beer now can knock me on my ass. 30 minutes later, I am fine. I did have a night where I had two beers and drove home like 3 hours later. I was all over the road and had my wife drive. Not sure what that was about but it wasn't cool.

I never was much of a drinker. Post-op I've only had one beer just to see what it would do to me. It was one of those MGD 64 Calorie beers....It didn't effect me at all. I did have some dinner with it while I drank it. Actually, dinner before and the beer after, but I didn't notice anything. Don't know if it was because of the type of beer or what? Pre-op I could get buzzed on two beers. May try it again with a different type of beer just to see.

Well the MGD 64 is barely beer anyway, they water it down so much to get to 64cals it hardly counts. So it doesn't surprise me that it didn't do anything. Thanks for the replies guys.

I just drink a 1/2 oz of wine once a month...No big drinker here. But I will tell you (with some sadness)...seeing here on these boards and at the local support groups, people standing up and saying they never had a problem with alcohol pre WLS...and now (post op) they have become an alcoholic. Most of us will grab for food for our security blanket...what happens when that is taken away? We usually turn to something else for comfort (or cross addiction). Just saying to go into this with your eyes very wide open or you could pay the price. Brian

I've read those stories and understand the dangers. No one knows how they will react but I have never had addiction problems with stuff like tobacco, I've smoked and dipped, sometimes to excess but stopping it was never a problem abstinence has always been an option for me on that stuff. Beer may end up having to be that way as well. Food is the hardest addiction to shake because an alcoholic can just not drink, an ex smoker can forgo buying the cigs, but we can't abstain from sitting down to eat.
Not a big drinker here but have had a beer now and again and it was OK. I think maybe I have had four post-op. I did get a little buzz from just the one beer I would drink but not much more than that and it would pass pretty quick.
The cross addiction thing is something to consider too. I have heard that beer has the carbonation we are to avoid. I say if you can handle it and find out your limits in a safe place to give it a try.
