WHAT?? 3.4 lb GAIN in one day????

First the good news.   Minor FART.

With my weight loss and newly found energy, I decided to play on our church's softball team this year.   (I used to play some sort of organized ball every year until about 7 years ago when it just got too tough)   We had our first practice on Sunday afternoon and I surprised myself with my speed in the outfield and my ability to make plays that I never would have dreamed of making in the past.     On the down side, with my loss of muscle mass, I have NO arm and NO power at the plate.  Time to switch to placement hitting.

Now the bad news -- our first practice and I'm already on the "disabled list".  Even though I did good stretching before hand, I felt my right hamstring "pop" as I was running for the last ball hit of the day.    I kept it iced and wrapped all day yesterday.   I don't see any bleeding/bruising on it yet but it hurts like the dickens and is pretty swollen.  I skipped my workout last night to avoid any further injury  (took my day off on a different day)

I get up this morning and weigh myself as usual and I'M UP 3.4 POUNDS????    There is no way I really gained that much weight in one day.   Is it possible that the swelling and fluids in the back of my leg really weigh 3.4 pounds??

To make it all worse, I've got my one year follow-up appointment with my surgeon today (I'm not quite to one year but you know how doctor's offices schedule things).    I worked HARD for those 3.4 pounds but they won't show when I get on the scales at the doctor's office.   Oh well.

Congrats on your return to the diamond!

Hamstring pulls are the pits and take a while to heal.  Hang in there.

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!

The way I understand it, a pound of fat has 3500 calories. Unless you happen to eat and retain around 12,000 calories, then the weight gain is just one of those fluke things (water retention, maybe?), and it will probably be gone soon. I eat beef jerkey from time to time, and usually appear to gain a pound or two the next day, followed by a loss of two or three the following day or two.

It's too bad your doctor may not see that extra 3 pounds (though, you may very well not show them even later in the same day), but you've lost so much that it isn't exactly like you've failed because of 3 measly pounds.

First of all, 3.4 lbs will be insignificant compared to the rest of your weight loss over the year.  I know that many people weigh themselves daily, but I'd suggest changing to weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly weigh-ins.  If you are following a post-op program, you shouldn't have to check your weight daily.  And, since retention or loss of fluids could affect you weight on a daily basis, you'd avoid your anxieties about weight loss.  i don't  think you feel that you are permanently gaining weight.  Why put extra pressure on yourself?

I would be interesting to have you post about your annual visit with the surgeon.

I agree with you.   Compared to the rest of the weight loss, 3.4 pounds is nothing.   However, I don't think it is real given it all happened in one day.

With regard to switching to weekly weighing, thanks for the advice.   I've considered doing that but I guess I'm too much of an engineer.  By measuring my weight on a daily basis, I've been able to see the daily fluctuations and the trends.  And, more importantly, I know NOT to get freaked out about them as long as they are within my "control limits"  :)  If I were just weighing once a week and saw a 3.4 pound gain from last Tuesday to today, I *would* be freaking out because that could be a very real gain over one week's time and I would need to do something to correct the direction of the line.   By weighing daily, I know that it has to be an anomaly.    If it doesn't fix itself in a couple of days,  then I'll start worrying.     Bottom line -- everybody's got to find a system that works for them.     And, so far, this one is working for me.

I just got back from my 1-year visit with my surgeon and it went REALLY well.     I first saw her bariatric fellow (doctor who is learning bariatric surgery from her) who took my history and looked over my labs and results.    He then brought in my surgeon and gave a debrief on me to the surgeon.    I've developed a hernia and we discussed options for handling that and discussed the lab results -- all excellent results  -- everything in the green per the labs "normal ranges" (side note -- MOST in the green per VitaLady's desired ranges for Bariatric patients as well -- a couple are in the red but trending positive since the 6 month labs were taken).   On the whole, she was very pleased with my results and congratulated me on my hard work to get there.

I was the same way on the muscle mass.  I lost 20 yards on my golf drives.  In tennis I couldn't pound the ball anymore.  Very frustrating.  3. whatever pounds...need to move on.  Just alittle pride showing.  You work at it and it will come off.  Yet it could be a more dangerious problem that may be hidden.  Are you going after sugar and carbs in a big way?  I started adding "alittle bit" of carbs and sugar...started gaining and gaining...Doing the old justifying for my great weightloss.  Brian  PS  I know what helped me with my weightloss when I was stuck or gained...hard physical work.  Doing projects around the house...cleaning the inside and outside of the car, gutters (maybe hard with your leg), clean windows and screens, prunning, pulling weeds (which I hate) helped with those last few pounds coming off.

Hi Cabin111

What surprised me about the 3.4 pounds was that it was all in one day.  So that is what makes me suspicious about the blood and fluids in the back of my leg.   My eating and my exercise have been right on the money up to that injury.   No big sugar and carb feast for me.

gonna say that some sugars and carbs creep up on you along with fluid retention.  I drink wine in the evening and I have to count those cals in my daily intake  and hide the scales for awhile.  Mindless head games.  Check your belt holes  better gauge.  Anything below 37" is good
Good luck

To answer ur question, yes. It's fluids pouring into the injured site repairing and flushing it. It'll pass. Rock on.

Hey Sid, sorry to hear about the injury.  It probably 2 things...  (keep in mind I am no dr.)  You played hard that day so chances are you built up a little bit of muscle mass.  That will add a little weight especially since you seemed to indicate your muscle mass is on the low side, adding some vigourous play like softball can quickly add some mass to your frame.  The biggest bulk of that 3.4 lbs is probably fluid, not only in the leg area but in the body in general.  As the body builds muscle, it retains water.  Muscle acts like a sponge until the body decides to release it.  Watch the sodium for a day or 2, chances are the 3.4 lbs (or at least most of it) will be gone by the end of the week.  Use the old clothes method for gauging weight gain.  If you have to loosen the belt a notch, then you could be headed for trouble.  Personally, I don't think its scientifically possible for you to have gained 3.4 lbs of fat in one day.  You have to ingest some serious calories for that to happen.  Congrats on the anniversary, you have done a remarkable job.  You coming to the support meeting on the 20th.  Hope to see you there.  We can catch up.

Dalton
