GBP in younger men
My 30 yo son with BMI of 53+ is considering Gastric By Pass.
He has some concerns over long term effects/complications (20-30 years).
In Googling long term complications of GBP, I come up with some pretty scary articles.
Can anyone point me to a board that deals with GBP in younger men or long term complications?
Thanks
Kevin

Go to www.dsfacts.com there are a few long term studies that show that after the DS, there are no significant malnutrition issues (as long as the person follows recommended vit supplimentation and getting regular blood work).
I had the DS at 33 and wouldn't have had to worry about 20 or 30 years because I would have been dead before then.

I had RNY a year ago on Friday. When I started I had a BMI of 52 and weighed in at 426. Now I have a BMI of 27.4 and am down to 225. I was 26 when I had the surgery and am 27 now. I haven't had a single complication. I stay away from sugars, breads, pastas, and grease. I work out 6 days a week for at least an hour to 2 hours a day mixing it up with cardio and weight resistance. A lot of the long term complications come from people who get lazy and go back to they're old eating and behavioral habits. 'i have never been more healthy in my life and due to Gastric Bypass I have been given a second chance to get life right this time. To do what I should have done the first time and not overeat and eat junk food, work out regularly and take good care of myself so I will be be around for my future children and grandchildren.
Gastric Bypass is a great tool to losing weight, but you have to have the mentality to change your life. If your not willing to change everything about yourself then you wont succeed.

A big factor to consider when reading those articles, is that in order to have 20-30 year results, those patients had what amounts to a completely different surgery than the ones done today. The surgeries used to kill a LOT more people, during and after, but have undergone changes for the better, not to mention that they have been done so many more times now.
So, 30 years ago it was a different surgery, done less often, without much knowledge of what kind of results to expect. Your son is essentially reading and worrying about and article written about a surgery he is not actually contemplating.
I had RNY 5/2009, so I'm not exactly a long term case-study, but I've lost 120 pounds since then (60 before the surgery), and my BMI went from roughly 50 (nearly 60 at peak in 8/2008) to around 35 now - and I'm still losing, even though it has slowed quite a bit.

It really shouldn't make any difference whether one is 30, 40 or even 50 as to possible comps of RNY ..
btw, has he also considered checking out the DS? The first DSer is now in his 70s and is still doing great and maintaining his weight loss ..

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

I know of a lady in my support group who is 16 years out from gastric bypass and has had very little problems. The problems she has had is because they knew so little in terms the vitamin needs GBP patients have. That solved she is doing fantastic and after this long has never had a regret. Her only big problem is that a few years ago she had a hysterectomy and gained 15 pounds.
