1 week post op
Congratulations Paul. I gained six pounds the first week after surgery. The doctor blamed all the fluids from the intravenous bottle. The more you follow your doctor's eating and exercise orders.. the more successful you will be.

That's something I never wondered about. My wife drove me to the hosp for my surgery and I had to stay there for a few days prior to the RNY on 11-14-00. I weighed 571. Following RNY I remained hospitalized for a week and had to go home by medical transport in a wheel chair. Once I got home, I lived in a hospital bed in our living room with a portable potty set up next to it. My folks stayed with us for a couple weeks and my Dad helped me get from the bed to the potty and cleaned me for the first 10 plus days. I think I had the bed and potty for about 6 mos.
I know this doesn't answer your question, but it's one of the few times I've recalled how rought things were following that RNY. I eventually had a staple line disruption and needed a revised RNY on 01-21-05. I had to only go in a couple days prior to surgery to have something put in to stop the possibility of throwing a clot. And, I was released within a few days after surgery. I was able to act like any other post-op except that I can barely walk, i.e., I can walk with a cane but not far.
You'll soon be losing more weight and becoming more active and you won't care about the weight of an organ. The big difference now is the size. The pouch is generally the size of your thumb and will grow so that within 6 mos it will be about the size of your fist. If you have been following your post-op diet correctly, it will then be at its new size and shouldn't grow any more.
