Blood pressure feedback

I have been on meds for my hypertension for a couple years now.  I have been monitoring my own BP in recent weeks.  It always seems to be around 105/60.  I guess that's an ok reading.

I don't have another appointment with my RNY surgeon for a couple more months.  I wonder If there's a chance he'll take me off the BP meds.  Has anyone had high BP before surgery and if you were taken off the meds, did your surgeon or your primary care physician order you to stop taking them?

whoever put you on the meds, should be the doctor that takes you off of them, but you can contact your surgeon to ask for feed back. I'd do it sooner then later, because you risk having low blood pressure episodes if your on meds and don't need them anymore.

My surgeon discontinued my BP meds when he discharged me from the hospital 6 months ago.  (I am not saying you should do this!)  Yesterday my BP (without meds) was 110/70.

Good luck!

My weight loss surgen took me off my high blood presure med when I was released from the hostipal. I am 4 months out, and my bp runs 110/70. 120/80 is normal.

Hi Hercules,

I, too, have been on BP meds for about 2 years.  When I was discharged they told me to monitor my BP a couple times a week but didn't take me off the meds.  After checking mine I learned that it was hovering around 107 to 131 highest/56 to 83 highest.  I called my surgeon's office and they told me I should check with  my PCP.  When I called my PCP he said to break my pill in half and take readings this week and call them back tomorrow.  Since mine is still in the normal range so far this week, I'm expecting he will take me off.

At a support group last night, though, I learned that some people came off and then had to go back on... I guess because their HBP was due to heredity or factors other than weight.  I tend to think mine was due to my weight since it only came on in recent years when my weight was at the highest.  Good luck!
