Avoiding addictive foods on Tu 02-16-10

I've used the term Abstinence in the past but just mentioning avoiding addictive foods works fine also.  The terminology is not important.  However, if you are a food addict, you should not eat addictive foods.  You know what they are.  Some people can tolerate a small portion such as a bite, but most of us do better by just staying away from such foods.

I won't necessarily make this post daily, but I intend to make my commitment on a daily basis.

Bob- great post- and I agree with almost everything you have said on the topic.

Because of your post last week, I confronted myself and I realized I was a food addict, my particular addiction is mostly high fat foods... and carbs.

The problem with any type of food addiction, is you cant abstain from food, like you can alcohol and drugs- you need food to survive.  Even some fat and carbs are actually good for you.

Motivated by the post last week- I did decide to try to quit sugars and as much refined carbs as I can- .  Tomorrow- being the beginning of Lent for us Catholics, I thought it would be fun to try it for 40 days ****il Good Friday)- then if I can do 40, why not 60? 80? 365?

I decided to start a group- a non religious, non denominational group- called Losers for Lent for those who want to try this for 40 days... and maybe more.  Anyone is welcome to join- again- there is no preaching- just mutual support.  If anyone is interested- please look it up under 'groups' or message me and I will send you the link.

Hope to see everyone there!

As a Carb addict and junk food junkie, I do know which foods turn me on.  I stay away from refined sugar and white flour.  I know many people advise to stay away from all of the "ose" substances like dextrose and fructose.  But, I do not have problem with most actual fruit.  I do recommend having whole grain foods instead of refined flour.

Although I appreciate the offer to join the group, I do better on a fairly slow moving Forum.  I post here and I am slowly working the Beck's Diet Solution on the Hunger and Food Troubles Forum.

Anyone interested in joining any group should go to Groups which are listed next to Forums abouve.

the first day of my 3 week pre-op for VSG surgery, I made a 2 year commitment to eliminate pasta, rice, bread, soda, table salt and alcohol from my diet.  (I wasn't eliminating flour in general...just these 3 specific food things).  These were my go-to foods....my volume foods.  Bread let me eat greater quantities of things that (after being off it for a while) I didn't really like in the first place.  Pasta and rice were just things I would eat in such quantity that I would put myself into nearly a sleepy coma.

Been over 5 months now and still going strong on the bread, pasta, rice and soda committment.  I've re-added table salt (was MISERABLE without it and realized I was getting more sodium from processed foods I was subsituting anyway).  It's not easy.  It's not fun....but it's been managable.  Best of luck.

I've found that many men who make a commitment to avoid addictive foods shortly after WLS can often stay free of them.  Staying clean during the 'honeymoon' period is critical.  That is a good time to change eating habits.  If we allow ourselves a little treat now and then during that time, we often find it hard to break a food addiction.
