Maybe a silly question
Hi Mattyc1981
They won't put it in until you are out -- so you won't even know it. When you wake up, it most likely will still be in but you can't really feel it unless the bag gets moved or something. When it gets removed, you just feel an odd sensation but it doesn't hurt.
I had mine removed a little too early and I wasn't able to go on my own. I was getting "backed up" with all the fluid they pump into you so they put a temporary one back in me. So, I was awake for that one. I didn't really feel it going in but, man, was I THANKFUL when they struck gold and I felt relief.![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/applause.gif)
I'm not trying to dismiss your concerns at all. I had similar concerns the first time I had to have a catheter (for a previous non WLS surgery). However, after the fact, it was really not much to worry about. You'll do fine.

If they put one in it will be while you are under. Whether they leave it in or not after surgery is up to your doc. I came out without one. Before I could go home I had to pee on my own. Had to be cathed twice prior to making my own water!
It was a little uncomfortable but draining over a 1000 cc of whiz out of my bladder was worth any discomfort.
<<< me after the tank was drained!
Good Luck on Wednesday and let us know how you are doing!!

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!
Hey Matt,
I was exactly the same way. I was not worried about the actual surgery, I was terrified over the catheter. Here's how it was for me. I woke up from surgery and had the catheter. I didn't feel it. I did have to walk a few hours after surgery and the only thing I felt was the tape pulling where the catheter was taped up. When I was in my room and just laying there, I couldn't feel it and it didn't bother me. The worst part for me was the tape.
The catheter was in for the whole three and a half days I was in the hospital. When they took it out, I was so worried about how it was going to feel, but to be quite honest, I was worried over nothing. When they removed it, it didn't hurt, but it felt more like I was peeing all over the place. Then everything was back to normal.
I understand your worries, but you will see after your surgery that you were really worried over nothing.
If you're worried about being man-handled, which was another little fear I had and embarrassment, they were very professional and the lady that checked it and removed it just did it without making any comments or anything. You don't even realize that is what she is doing.
Hope this helps.

Here is one that I can comment on!
I had one back in 2002 after a really bad car accident. I was medicated and when they were feeding the tube through, the doctor had to tell me to grab the bed because I was making fists and looked quite angry. It wasn't pain, but I did not enjoy it AT ALL! When they took it out, they tell you to take a breath and breath out on 3. When you breathe out, they rip it out fast. Its still kind of uncomfortable, but quick and doesn't linger.
I have 5 people in my close family who has had this surgery and all of them say they just wake up with it in. Don't worry about the "pull-out" though, no big deal.

Maybe it's because I never asked the question, or maybe it just never dawned on me, but I had NO CLUE they were going to do a catheter for my surgery, lol. So when i woke up post op with it in, i was kinda surprised. But it wasn't a big deal at that point because it was already in. But let me tell you, when that nurse went to pull it out on day 2, I damn near wanted to punch the hell out of her. Very, VERY uncomfortable for me, lol. But it's over in a quick second. I wouldn't describe as pain, but extreme discomfort. You'll be ok, close your eyes and look the other way, LOL.
