Jarring Exercise & Malabsorption

 Hey Guys,

I'm getting close to 4 years out on the RNY and I notice that I lose weight a lot more quickly if I do exercise which jars the body, such as running or rope jumping. Given, these exercises tend to be bigger calorie burners, but I also notice a lot more "unabsorbed" food coming through when I do this type of exercise. Could it be that it is the pyloric valve in a normal stomach that puts the breaks on food slipping through undigested?

Wondering if the folks testing post RNY people for unabsorbed calories forgot to check the runners as a separate group? A lot of folks would be avoiding running because of excess weight or joint issues, and many folks who weight 350 or more would be less likely to run in their first year, if the test were done on folks in their first 1-2 years post op.

Please consult your doctor before attempting!

Best Wishes,

Dave

When speaking of malabsorption, they are usually refering to the vitamins and minerals from food not being absorbed, not just necessarily the calories, that is why we need to supplement for life. I do Ultra Endurance Sports, and get my levels checked regularly, and have never had a problem in this area. Best of luck and congrats on your long-term success.

Thanks, yes I do belive taking care not to overeat has helped me change my habits for the long term. Definitely have to get the vitamins in! I take about six a day of the bariatric chewables. (Recommended dose: 4 a day) and bloodwork doesn't show any problem. What I am seeing is lots of weight loss when I run, plus a lot of food "coming out."

I am active all year, but when snow skiing starts I can't keep the weight on.  It is the only jarring activity I do.   I lose 10-15 pounds every winter, down 11 already.

I do know that when I would hit a stall I would end up doing hard physical work (pruning trees, cleaning the car)...for some reason that would break the stall and cause the weight to drop.  Brian  PS  Would sex be considered more jarring or banging??

I guess it depends on which partner was doing what.

Lots of "Jarring" when my wife and I went to the fertility clinic, lol. Banging all the rest of the time!

Interesting theory you got there.

I don't know that I'll test it any time soon, myself. I'm working real hard right now at walking that fine line between pushing myself as hard as I can in the P90X plyo and leg workouts and trying to keep my right knee from swelling up so much that I can't bend it at all. All my stuff is pretty low impact right now. I think eventually I'll get that knee scoped and cleaned out, and probably if I'd drop another 40 that would help as well. I'm still floating between 255 and 260 and at my age that's still a lot of weight on the knees.

Animals poop more when they are active. I have a dog whose anal glands need to be "expressed" regularly, when I asked "why doesn't it just happen naturally", I was told that in the wild dogs would move around be active and that would cause their anal glands to excreet without help. I'm guessing that when we move around in "jarring" exercises, that it causes our bodies to eliminate more fully.

I know people who do yoga type exercises to keep regular, again I think that the movement helps.
