Holiday Potlucks

How do you handle this?  I was chewed out for not eating at a pot luck.  The smell of the food almost made me sick!  The amount of sugar and fat floating aroun was terrible and I couldn't handle it.  People kept telling me to try their desert or dish that was full of sugar or was just food that I knew I couldn't handle.  How do you handle this?  I'll donate my $20 bucks to the cause but I just won't show up since I have to stick to my diet!   people couldn't understand that I wasn't being rude, but I will stick with my protein bars at work.  People just want to be nice but the smell was terrible and I just walked away but caught hell for doing it.  I think I'll just send them my before and after pictures and say this is why but I don't think this will work.  Any ideas?

I usually seek out the most healthy items (white meat, vegetables, "ungravied" sides) and eat a small portion.  As far as desserts, I uaually tell them I'll "try some later" and don't, or I'll eat a very small portion and let that be it.  I still enjoy the VERY occasional potluck, I just know my limits.

Happy Holidays!  :)

One word...........SHRIMP

I always bring shrimp, it is easy, high protein, no fat (I bring lemon wedges to avoid ****tail sauce),is easy to transport, and everybody likes it.

Thankfully, I had the DS and can eat all those goodies. But I know before I had surgery, when I was dieting, I would just simply say that I'm "low carbing it" or something along that line.

You shouldn't need to explain yourself but you can say that your doctor is restricting what you eat for health reasons.  Any further questions would just be rude.

I know the feeling, Loafer ..

Just a few weeks after my surgery, I went to visit a friend down by the border.   While there, she had to attend a "doggy b.d. party" (don't ask  ) with her dog.  Being her guest, I politely tagged along.  Sure, they had treats for the canine guests, but wow - what a spread for their masters.  I love Mexican food, and there was plenty of it, and home-cooked there, as well as the usual BBQ cookout fare.    I SO badly wanted to sample a bit of everything offered, but, very frustratingly, could only muster a few bites of a few dishes before I felt like a lead balloon and was worried I would get the heaves if I tried to eat any more.  Even the smell of the food was making me nauseous by then.     My friend knew I had WLS, of course (she is a VBGer herself), but the other attendees probably thought I was being "finicky" or something, since they were digging away into things with great gusto.     I was afraid they might feel insulted that I wasn't really chowing down on their hard-labor efforts ..   I never did figure out how to handle that awkward situation ..
