It was a bloody horrible weekend, mate!
Saturday night I was wrapping up the evening with a final constition before going to bed. Wasn't feeling the greatest. I fishished and went to bed. Upon laying down, I felt a discomfort that I could only associate with a stricture and something clogging my pouch. I then felt like puking. I got up headed to the bathroom and puked BLOOD into the toilet. (I am guessing about a cup full.) I yelled out for my wife and when arrived, I told her what was happening. As she tried to call the Surgeon's office and then 911 for an ambulance, I sat back on the pot and had a massive BM ....Full of blood. That just got me feeling worse. I was dizzy and my wife said I actually passed out. When I came to, I cleaned myself up and sat on the bed for the ambulance to arrive. I was taken back to the hospital that did the surgery, as I didn't trust any other to handle my new pouch properly.
At the ER, I had 2 or 3 more bloody BM's. A catscan showed that I didn't have anything lodged or any major openings. The ER called the surgeon on call and they proceeded to admit me to the hospital. I was up all night long and fell asleep late in the morning. The oncall surgeon came by and decided to let me wait until the following day (Monday) for my regular surgeon to see me. Dr. Cacucci decided to do an endoscope. Found that a bleeding ulcer was to blame. However, it had healed itself.
I am now on Carafate as well as prevacid to help heal the ulcer and stomach lining.

So, was that an ulcer in the pouch, or the remnant stomach? ![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/confused.gif)
Glad u're O.K., though .. I bet that was scary as hell ..![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/whatchutalkingabout_smile.gif)
I remember the time as a pre-op I finally got sick and tired of all my high b.p. pills I was having to take .. I vowed I would NOT take anymore .. Within less than a day I was sitting on the couch watching T.V. and suddenly had a massive nosebleed that just would not stop, no matter what I tried .. I guess my pressure had "rebounded" even higher than it would normally have been if I had not been doing b.p. meds .. The ambulance came out and they took me in. Not much they could do in the ambulance for me in the meantime, just let the blood largely trickle down the back of my throat ..![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/confused_smile.gif)
At the ER they looked up in my nose with the fiber scope and I guess saw that the vessel that ruptured was in the nostril and they packed it full of gauze and put like a large plastic clothespin on my nose to pinch it off. After probably about 1/2 hour or so (and b.p. meds) it finally clotted and stopped.![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/whew.gif)
The doc told me what a dumb thing to do ..
He said I was lucky that it wasn't a burst vessel in my brain instead, which could have meant a big time stroke for me.

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "
HW/461 LW/251 GW/189 CW/274 (yep, a DS semi-failure - it happens :-( )
Scott, sorry to hear about your issues. These things can happen though. Were you supposed to be off the Carafate and antacid already? Dr. Inman keeps her patients on it for a good while post-op. Good choice to go back to St. V's Carmel. None of the other hospitals will touch you and really don't want them to unless it's something like a heart attack or stroke. Stay on those meds. and you'll be fine.

I've not had the problems myself, but I've picked up a couple of rectal bleeders in my day. Those are definitely in the top 5 for awkward/uncomfortable transports, along with miscarriages and labor.
There is no graceful or tactful way to say to a patient that I have to check inside their knickers to see what is going on.
