Self pay vs insurance?

My RNY cost 66 thousand dollars. Insurance has so far paid all but about 3-thousand dollars.

What have others paid for RNY?  Do they charge less for self pay?  Is it cheaper to have it done in Mexico.. and if so.. how much less?

Hello,

Due to some insurance issue I am now a self pay my Dr offers a self pay RNY for 24K and a self pay sleeve for 16K...after much research I have decided that the sleeve is the right choice for my life style. I did not factor in the cost of the surgery into my decision...I did not want to let the cost put up a mental road block.

Surgery 3 years ago in Modesto CA...$23,000. self pay.  Any complications and I would be charged 1/2 their billing rate for services.  I stayed an extra day but wasn't charged more.  At the time I had 2 different health insurance policies...both excluded WLS...Go figure...

Around $40,000 for everything, surgeon, hospital, labs, followups, etc.  Insurance covered WLS, thank goodness.  I paid about $2000 out of pocket.

My Open RNY disal and galbladder removal was 46,000 to 50,000.  Tricare pay all, I did have to pay $25.00 out of pocket.  I was lucky...

My Dr, and hospital bill for my open DS was about 43k for everything. BC/BS paid them 17k. I was out about 350 bucks for deductibles.
I'll never understand how insurance works. They bill 46k and settle for 17k payout, and nobody complains?

Hey Herc ..  don't Bogart it just to RNY, man ..

I paid $10K for my lap DS, total medical charges  ..   Went to Brazil to one of the top DS surgeons there and cash paid, due to a blanket exclusion against any kind of WLS "or treatment for obesity" in my BC of Texas policy   ..   Had a great time while down there (even w. the surgery) ..   And it was all tax deductible

$66K is just nuts for WLS ..     Last I heard, the costs for U.S. RNY were around $30K-40K, on average ..   Who in the world was your surgeon/hospital?   Sounds like they really gouged your ins. co.   You're lucky they covered it (well, almost all of it)  ..  !     Which ins co. did you have, btw?

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

I am a Texas state employee..our insurance exclude any weight management procedure.

My wife's lap band cost $15k two years ago but that includes doctor visits and fills for life.
My lap band three weeks ago by the same doctor cost me $13k including service for life.

My wife says it is the best thing she ever did with our money.
I hope I have the same feeling in six months - when I am below 200lbs.
