two days home - post op

I had gastric bypass on 10/20 and to be honest, it hasnt been a pleasent experience. The first two days in the hospital were alright but it has clearly been a harder process since I had gotten home. When I got home on Thursday, I have gotten a lot lazier with doing the mandatory things like walking around and staying hydrated; I've just been wanting to sleep 24/7. The clear liquirds diet is absolutley horrible and if I think about broth or jello of any kind, I think I might gag. The gas buildup has been and painful and my mind keeps telling me that it wants to eat regular food when obviously I cant. The upside, I have lost about 7 pounds already since Tuesday. Any recommendations for this stuff?

You sound exactly like I did a month ago when I was a few days post op.  What you are going through is normal. But it's important that you follow the doctors orders and stay hydrated and walk. Hang in there guy and you'll be fine.

yea what i actually just found out about is sugar free crystal lite. I'm drinking that now and actually took a walk around my block last night so. How long did the sensation of wanting to eat like your old habits last?

Unfortunately they can't rewire our brains the way they reroute our stomach. Will take a while for the mind to catch up with things I imagine.

I am learning to stop eating the old way in a painful way. I couldn't figure out why I continued to feel that painful bloating until I realized that when the nutritionist told me to only eat one or two ounces of a food... she meant what she said.  Servings are about one fourth of a cup.. AND eaten over 20 to thirty minutes. It seems ridiculous... but believe me... it is a lot less painful for me to eat seven meals a day, every two hours.. but in those small amounts.  I can eat a TOTAL of about 3 ounces of food at a meal five weeks out. I'm also feeling energetic finally.

Jason,

Sounds like a case of "buyer's remorse" going on.  BTDT!  Think going through that is mandatory!

The liquid diet is a pain in the ass and very bland - that is the idea behind being on one post op.  To be easy on the pouch till it can handle foods again.  Have any SF Popsicles?  At 18 months I keep them handy still.  You gotta stay hydrated!

Movement helps the gas!  That is the only advice on that other than getting some Gas-X strips.

Welcome to the Loosers Bench and see the directions below!

yea i found a couple SF popsicles last night but I'm going to go get some more today because it definitely does help by putting some variety in to the diet. I only have a couple more days before i start the stage of low fat creamy soups and etc so I should be alright until then. Thanks for the advise guys.

Hey,

I'm going under the knife on Dec 7th, but my wife is one year out and she still swears by SF popsicles.  In fact she had 4 last night, and loves 'em, especially the fudgsicles (one of the best ways for her to still get a chocolate fix).  I'm a little worried myself about what the first few weeks are going to be like.  But I know walking helps with the gas, big time.  You might sound like the campfire scene in Blazing Saddles, but that's ok.  And if you haven't seen that movie, walk down to BlockBuster or Stop and Shop Redbox and rent it.  You can watch it over a protien shake...
